Hey everyone. I have been in design for a while now. first time with 3D scanning. I am a VDC Tech Coordinator for an electrical contractor. I am trying to find a good way to give a file to our PMs to do some pre-planning then eventually the owners to have a 3D as built. I have a Structure core scanner. It is a cheap scanner connected to an ipad, but seems very powerful and useful.

I originally take .OBJ files import them into MeshMixer. I have things stitched together and looks as good as I need it to. It is a remodel and I used cut planes to clean up some bleed thru my project. Next, I am wanting to export to a file that is able to keep my textures. Is this a thing? Does anyone have a good means to the madness??? Pardon the grain-yness… and if anyone has any advice on getting this to Revit, that would be awesome!! Thank you in advanced!

I did find    -     "We export OBJ, and optionally also OBJ with the color-per-vertex extension. In addition, if your model has texture maps, we will export those too. Note, however, that our image file-naming is a bit buggy, so if you are going to export an OBJ with textures, we strongly recommend you do it in a different folder than your source files!"

This export exported an MTL and PDF file along with the OBJ. The texture is still not there. This would be and ideal file type for both end goals.

If I got you right you merged several textured .OBJ files to a single one?

If yes please check this issue on several textured sources. Make sure that different .OBJs own different material definitions in their .MTLs

In case of merging several textured .OBJs MM outputs a single .OBJ along with a .MTL and several texture images (BTW: Not sure if .PDF is an image format being widely supported by 3D apps. Use .jpg or .png instead) Importing such a several texture file to another application might be an issue as well.

Not being familiar with Revit I'm not sure about the Revit part . Seems there's no mesh format as a native import format (also there seem to be addons...). But point clouds are supported.

There are two ways to ship color along with a mesh: Texturing and/or PerVertexColor. While in case of Texturing a snippet of an image is applied on a mesh face (might be a nicer appearance), using PerVertexColor each mesh vertex owns a certain RGB color information. (Not sure about the iPad app but ,if I remember right, the desktop application Skanect supports both ways).

Now if you convert a mesh to its vertices only creating a point cloud, you will loose the texture (as you deleted the faces) but PerVertexColor (as it is stored in the points) can be kept (depends on the very format).

To show PerVertexColor in MM you need to enable  VertexColor as MeshColorMode in MM's Preferences and drag a different SHADER (than the world spheres) onto the object.

If you say "The texture is still not there" does that mean reimporting the export to MM doesn't show the texture any more? Or is this concerning a Revit import.

Some of this is extremely foreign to me... Haha!

I have combined a handful of scans for a home we did a remodel of. The texture of the walls is showing. When exporting, I can not get them to show in the exported file. I will look thru that link you provided. Thank you!
