Try a vector render.  I am not sure if 2016 has that option...it is still in 2015 I am pretty sure...I don't have it in front of me.

I don't know...it seems as though 2016 has jacked a bunch of things up.

Did you have to set a setting in render options in the render settings?

Rgr that....I couldn't use mental ray either.  But there is no reason to use mental ray...it is just vector lines.

I thought there was a setting in the render options you have to enable to get it to work....I may be wrong.

the way it works with the vector render is

  • select and set the edges at the low poly state of your model (Create/Sets/Quick select sets)
  • after that select your model and convert smooth mesh preview to polygons (Modify/Convert/smooth mesh preview to polygons)
  • than you have to soften all edges (Normals/soften edges)
  • now you select your model and turn in the EDGE mode and go to quick select set (Edit/Quick select sets) and choose your set from the first step. Only the edges of the low poly state should be selected now
  • the selected edges from your set have to turn in to hard edges (Normals/Harden Edge)
  • open render settings choose maya vector render
  • turn of fill object in the fill options settings
  • in the Edge Options settings next the fill options are all the relevant setting which effect the look of your wireframe
  • make your settings and render

now you have a render of the smooth mesh preview wireframe that appears in your viewport after pushing 3 on your keyboard

Rick did you try it with MR with all edges set to hard?  Set to face?

I think it is the same as setting all the edges to hard...but it may be to the face and not the edge.  If that makes sense.

I break up testing around to make it working with MR

because afterwards has the vector render some benefits

already its always a benefit if you can change the look of parts from your animation separate...

so i can change the color of the wireframe and add some gradient...

my screwmodel wireframe part is complete right nowdatasheet.jpg
