Removing noise in Arnold Render

Hello,

I am attempting to remove noise from a tree model I downloaded. I attempted to play with the specularity, added a rayswitch shader at one point as well as clamping sample values to no avail.

If someone can have a look, that would be great. I feel like there a million things to try with this and only a few solutions to fix this.

Thanks.

Hi!

For further help, please upload the scene-file.

It looks like direct specular noise. Here is what happens when I run the AOV in the render view:

I want to send the scene to you, but it's 89mb (after zipping it). Is there another way I can send it to you?

Thanks

Hi!

To make the scene smaller just delete 80% of the faces of the tree (it's just a repetition of leaves).

Materials and settings will be kept.

The first recommendation would be to use Arnold Shaders (don't use Phong with Arnold).

HI mspeer,

Thanks!

I uploaded the scene and removed most of the leaves.

I switched from Phong to a standard AI shader but the color and luster is lost, although the fireflies are gone.

Hi!

The main problem is the leaf geometry. With only one face you have one angle with full reflectivity (from a directional light) and for all other angles it is zero.

Solution:

1. Better leaf geometry

2. Tune shader for a more soft highlight

3. With an Arnold Shader make use of Weight and Roughness Attributes for Base and Specular.

4. Use an other light source like a SkyDome Light + HDRI or make use of the Angle Attribute in the Arnold tab of the directional light (which simulates a bigger light source).

I just changed the material to Lambert and it gave me the result I wanted.

Thanks for the help, again mspeer.
