Maya Ambient Occlusion rendering. Specific Objects not showing up in final render?

I'm using Maya 2017 with a mental ray plug in. to render a scene. all the objects have been properly selected and added to an ambient occlusion layer but for some reason a very specific table and all its content don't show up in the ambient occlusion layer. I've tried it with multiple different ambient occlusion layers and made sure to select the table and its content but its the same result every time. Its the table in the bottom left corner with the chess board.
