Any way to generate a normal map from a model in maya?

I want to make two renders of a model. One diffuse texture, and one normal map texture. These could be combined to create a dynamically lit sprite in a game. Is there any way to do this in maya?

Yes - Menu Bar> Lighting/Shading> Transfer  Maps

I did some experimentation with this, and I figured out that I have to transfer the normal maps to a plane, and it does work. I haven't tried, but i believe you can also transfer diffuse maps. Thx
