All Lights in Every Render Layer?!

So... any particular reason all my lights show up by default in every render layer in 2017 update 4? I don't feel like this use to be the case. Now when I have loads of lights, I have to add all of them, and then create overrides for every light I don't want on. Is this suppose to happen?

Hi!

Yes, this has been changed.

Add the global lights collection and disable it, then you can start adding individual lights.

Cool. How exactly do I do that? 😛

I'm following what I think are directions in the knowledge base, but all my lights are still on.

Every time I drag and drop a light into a collection it's greyed out, and none of the overrides I try to apply do anything. The only way I can get it to work is to get to each individual light and create an override for all of them to turn them off! Is this one of those works-great-with-arnold features that is useless for the rest of us?

FYI, I'm using Redshift, and none of my lights show up in the light editor.

Ah... well, it would appear that Redshift lights do not obey the Global Light layer. I was, however, finally able to create a render layer that could put all my lights on, and then disable them, but I had to add them as shapes, and not lights. I suppose this is due to it being a third-party renderer, and not the native Arnold render engine.

Thanks for the help!

Hello Everyone!

I know this message is late, but I wanted to add to this info since today was my first time running into this issue.

The Admin's answer is correct, but the issue with the lights being grayed out is, in my opinion, a glitch - I'm using Maya 2018.

When you assign the master Light node to your layer and turn it off, you can start adding lights individually to the layer.

BUT - If you are VIEWING that sub-layer, the light will be added to the layer incorrectly. It will appear Grayed out in Asset list and will not be visible.

FIX: Make sure the Eyeball is set to the Master Layer, but highlight the sub-layer and add the chosen light(s) to the layer. It will appear with White Text in the asset list.

When you Go Back to View the isolated sub-layer, it will be correct. The light(s) will work.

I wanted to add an image to the previous post showing the Grayed out light when trying to add it to the Collection.

NOTE: If a light already exists in the layer, you CAN add a light when in sub-Layer View mode.
