Ai Toon shader stylized highlights not working

I’ve been experimenting with the new Arnold toon shading, and so far I’ve been getting some fairly good results. But the stylized highlights feature I don’t seem to be able to make it work.

i tried to link multiple types of lights, tried to use the full shape name of the lights, mapped the color with a ramp, and still couldn’t make it work.

im using Maya 2018.4, which i updated hoping it could be a bug from the previous version, and reinstalled Arnold render for its latest build, 3.1.1, but still no fixes for this shader feature.

Can anyone please help me? I was really hoping to use this shader for my next project.

thanks

Hi @Anonymous! Welcome to the community!

Are you using Arnold Lights? If yes, what type?

The supported light types are Distant, Point, Spot, and PhotometricMesh and Skydome lights are not supported since they can create blurred results.

Please let me know if this info helps you.

Hi, thank you for your reply.
No i`m mainly using a directional light now, but i experimented with spots,
points and area lights too that are supported by the shader.
I tried now with Arnold lights (area light) but still didn`t get any
visible result.

Hi again @Anonymous!

Please try using an Arnold Photometric Light and tell me how it works.

Still, nor effect on the stylized highlights.
I plugged in and IES file in it, again, tested out linking the light to the
Stylized highlight, both shape and transform nodes, and it definitely
affects the lighting of the character, and changes the tonemap of the
shader color, but doesn`t give me no Highlights, on it.

Hi @Anonymous!

Would you be available for a remote desktop session, so that I can see the issue directly on your machine?

If yes, please download TeamViewer and send me a private message with your ID and password.

Hi @Anonymous!

As mentioned during the remote session, in order to have highlights displayed, the aiToon shader needs to have Weight value of Specular higher than zero.Specular_aiToon.JPG

I'm having trouble getting this to work. I've tried MMB + dragging the object from the outliner into the light parameter. I've tried typing the name of the light. I have a spec > 0 and have tried Distant (is this maya's directional light?), Point, Spot, and Photometric lights. I'm able to get an effect by light linking, but I'd like to get the shader working. Any ideas? Thanks!

You're using the shape name?
