Maya 2018 crashed and will not open most of my scences

My '2018 Maya' crashed last night on my computer, since then it will not open most of my scenes. I know it is not the files that are corrupted, because they open on two other computers, PERFECTLY FINE, separate from my own personal computer. It is when I try to open any of the scenes on my computer in the '2018 Maya'; it freezes/glitches out and will not respond to any commands. I have stored several save files on this particular scene and tried opening them, but it still freezes/glitches on my own personal computer. This scene will no longer open properly, since it has crashed on my computer in '2018 Maya'. I had tried repairing Maya, reinstalled Maya, and uninstalling Maya before reinstalling again, it still hasn't work. I remember a certain message appearing on screen while in Maya, during the night as I was working on this scene before it had completely crashed. I had thought it would interfere with my work, so I canceled it, but after I canceled it, Maya suddenly froze . . . I had resorted to force quit and it would not load any my scenes, or even my partner's scene, after that. It will only open scenes that has little amount of work present on it. I tried looking up any kind of solution, for this dilemma, I have yet to find the appropriate action to even begin to help me fix this troubling issue.

Does anyone have any idea what happened, or how I can begin to fix this? If you have the had this issue and successfully fixed it, please let me know as soon as possible, since I am a college student who needs this program for my classes.

Hi @Anonymous

Thanks for the update you sent me via private message!

Since I was able to open the file fine and your friends files aren't working either this is most likely an issue with your hardware and/or Maya.

What GPU are you using and does the driver version match with our certified hardware list?

You can find our certified hardware list here!

Finally, when your Maya freezes, does the Output window say anything or are there any errors/reports that appear?

Hi sean,

Sean, I apologize for the late reply, I have been busy again with my classes. I believe that my GPU and the driver version matches the certified hardware list. It was a little confusing trying to see if it was certified. I have a screenshot here of my computer driver and the driver is currently up to date. The output window shows no errors/reports when my maya freezes.PictureofGraphicCard.png

Hi @Anonymous

Is that the only GPU you have? If so that may be the issue because it's not recommended to run Maya on just a Intel HD card as it isn't powerful enough to properly handle Maya.

While you uninstalled/reinstalled you'll also want to try deleting your settings/preferences.

Hi Sean,

That is the only GPU I have. I see how that may be the problem, but I am just confused, since Maya was working fine with that Intel HD card before that crash. My maya crashed around 10/18/2018, I installed Maya around late August/Early September, so I was working on Maya 2018 for about a good month and more before it crashed.  If the Intel HD card wasn't powerful enough to properly handle maya I feel like it would have given me problems from the start? I have deleted my settings/preferences but that did not fix anything.

Hi @Anonymous

It is unusual and while an Intel HD isn't that powerful, I don't think its the source of the problem here.

The problem is definitely whatever error you cancelled out of that caused the initial crash.

Since the file is opening fine on other computers its something with your machine. You may want to double check and make sure you properly performed a clean uninstall/reinstall of Maya and completely removed all files/folder related to Autodesk and Maya before installing.

If that still doesn't change anything, the issue may be with your system itself and you might need to rollback your system to a date before the crash occurred.

Hi Sean,

I apologize for the late reply. I tried doing the rollback but that still didn't work. I am going to try another uninstall and reinstall of maya following those steps of how to do a clean uninstall/reinstall of maya. I just didn't have time over the past few days. I am going to try to do the clean uninstall and reinstall either tomorrow or the next day. I will let you know if that fixes the problem.

Hi @Anonymous

Hmm ok.

Its possible a Windows update may be causing this issue. When you get a chance can you please try rolling back the most recent windows update to see if anything changes?

You can find steps on how to do that here!

Hi @Anonymous

Hmm ok. This is pretty unusual as most of these steps should have worked by now.

When you get a chance, can you please zip and attach the scene file here or via dropbox/google drive or another file sharing program so I can take a look at it? If the file is confidential or under NDA please send it to me in a private message instead of posting it here.

Hi!

Here it happens only the first time when opening the Preferences window after starting a new Maya session.

This does not happen with Maya 2016 (pre Workspaces Maya versions).

Example:

1. Start Maya

2. Open Preferences (doesn't matter if from top menu or Icon bottom right)

3. Click Cancel in Preferences window.

A short flicker occurs (complete UI refresh) and now some windows like Attribute Editor don't update anymore.

Undocking a window helps (until undocked, re-docking and the problem occurs again), but only Switching Workspace removes the effect completely and it does not happen again during the current session.
