In Blender there is a shortcut, "L", where you can select all of the connected faces that are linked together on an object. This is really helpful when you need to select multiple parts of the same object that are not connected together. This video link on YouTube explains it better than me. I believe the shortcut name in Blender is called "Select Linked."
Does anyone know if there is a shortcut like this in Maya???

In F11, just double click on the object and all faces will be selected... you can also select a row of faces by holding shift.
