Face selection not selecting the faces that I want

I'm totally new to this and can't find a solution anywhere about this problem. I'm trying to select faces however it will not select the faces that I want.

I have a similar problem, when  I try to select a face on the front of the cube, it will select any face that is not at the front of the cube.

I tried selecting other faces to get it to possibly select the front, it still did not work. There are no objects in the way or anything, this only happens on my home laptop, but not on a different computer.

THANK YOU SO MUCH IT WORKED. I was seeing something about how this tends to happen on laptops but this is my only computer so I was worried I was SOL. This problem was keeping me from progressing on my assignments so I have been losing my mind trying to work around it. thank you thank you!

For selecting face under cursor,

Follow these steps:

First open MAYA then open Windows, Then go to settings & preferences, then go to display, then scroll down to bottom you will see viewport 2.0 then select rendering the engine, select Direct X 11, Then Save and then restart maya. The problem will be solved.

This is a huge setback for me it's one of the reasons I'm discouraged from paying for this 3D software.
I hope there can be a solution for this because it makes me loose my composure and willingness to any 3D project.
