how do i stop my shape, which ive just punched holes in, from getting all crazy when i smooth? its supposed to be a wall socket. I want the shapes outer edges to round off quite a bit, but i want the holes i've punched to stay in tact. see pictures below. Thanks!

You have to learn more about edge loops to keep the hard shape of geometry where you want and also good modeling topology, when you do a boolean it should not be smoothed afterwards unless you totaly cleaned up the geometry...you could however do your socket with more polygons just as it supposed to be ...then do a boolean for the holes and leave as is...it will still render with bad geometry created after the boolean.
