Select one edge and another one moves

Hi there,

If the answer to this question already exists in the forum then I apologize. But I couldn't find it when I looked for it.

Recently I bought a new hard drive and installed Maya 2015 on it. I have used Maya 2014 and 2016 on this machine before and they worked flawlessly. I was working on a project in Maya 2014 on the old hard drive. But I opened it in Maya 2015 this time. Everything seemed fine until today. Basically, when I select one edle loop and try to move it, the selected edge doesn't move, instead, another edge from some other place starts to move. Also when I try to to extrude an edge, some other edge from another place gets extruded.Maya Problem.png

The other things is that, I am no longer able to select edge loops in my models. When I double click on an edge loop, some edges on that particular loop get selected, then the loop breaks off and maya selects few random edges from other distant places.Maya Problem 02.png

I have tried everything but can't figure this out. I always work with quads and have tripple checked everything. But the problem still remains.

Please Help,

Thanks in advance.

Hey ! I couldn't get it to work so I exported the file to max as a new scene and then exported again as an obj file

When i imported the obj file it working all fine

I guess it'll do for now since there's no solution anywhere

I hope it helps !

Here is the mesh that's giving me problems. Please check it and tell me if there is anything you can suggest. By the way, is there a way to make a clone of your original mesh by taking a fresh polygon primitive and somehow automatically transforming it into a clone of your previously existing models with the exact same geometry? I remember watching a tutorial in which a guy made a head model. Then he took a polygon sphere and did something and the sphere automatically turned into a clone of the head model. If there is such a way, then please tell me about it. Thank you.

Sorry for the late reply. No, I haven't found a solution yet. Of course I tried to do what you just mentioned. And it worked for a little while. I was creating blend shapes and after making a couple of them, I noticed some problems with the original head model. As soon as I made changes to it, all of those problems came back. And since yesterday, I have been trying to run that file on other people's computers on Maya 2015, 16 and 17. So far Maya 2017 is the only version on which the file ran flawlessly. But then I don't have Maya 2017 and specially, I don't have the Vray plugin for it. So I am stuck with Maya 2015 for now.

Hi!

There is no file attached, make sure the file has a maximum size of 5MB (and maybe compress it as ZIP), or upload it on an other place.

For the clone request please open a new thread and i will answer there.

Hi!

This was really hard, but i got it.

There is one corrupt edge, you cannot delete it and you can't delete the 2 vertices that make the edge, but you can delete one of the adjacent faces, re-create the face (re-close) with the Append to Polygon Tool and the problem is solved.

To detect such Problems use Mesh Component Display -> Display Borders.

The mesh is handled different in various Maya Versions. For example Maya 2017 does not allow smoothing with OpenSubdiv, because of bad geometry, but Maya 2016 Ext2 allows it and creates a lot more bad borders when smoothing, unlike the Maya Catmull-Clark Algorithm. Also Mesh -> Cleanup does not work here. Without history i can't tell what caused the problem, would be interesting to know.

In short: re-create one of the adjacent faces of the corrupted edge and the Problem is solved:

Thanks a lot mspeer. I truly appreciate it 🙂 That's one problem down. During the last few days, a whole hell of such problems has broken loose on me. Yesterday I installed Maya 2016 and started working on my file. After doing a lot of work, I started creating blend shapes. Then as soon as I clicked on the Sculpt Geometry Tool, the selected mesh turned completely black and as soon as I exit the sculpt tool everything goes back to normal. The sculpt tool does make changes to the mesh though, but I can only see them in a silhouette. I first checked the lighting and then the normals, but everything seems to work correctly. I then exported the file into FBX, OBJ and MA formats and tried to open it in Maya 2015. But all of my textures and rigs were completely destroyed in maya 2015. So since Maya 2015 won't let me open the file, I am stuck with Maya 2016 and the only problem I am facing right now is with the Sculpt tool. During one instance, I kept making changes to the black head model (Which I had duplicated for the purpose of making blend shapes) with the sculpt tool and after a while I noticed, that things were not going back to normal even when I exited the tool. I checked the Vray material in the hypershades which I had applied to the original head model, and the material had also turned black. But on the rest of the head models, the material was still there, regardless of the fact that the vray material had been corrupted. One thing I should mention is that I am running this machine without an external graphics card for now. And I have used the sculpt tool in Maya 2016 on this machine before as well on my old hard drive. But this time around it is turning my models black. I have already posted the other question regarding making a clone automatically of your existing geometry using a new polygon primitive (As you had suggested). Hope you would reply to that soon. Should I also start another thread and post the question regarding the sculpt tool problem in it?

Hi!

Feel free to mark the answer that solves your problem as solution, so others interested in this thread will get a better overview.

Also your problem with the sculpt tool should be posted in a new thread, it's a lot easier find, for people with the same problem as well as people who could help you. Also it could be individual marked as solution for a better overview.

A general advice: Don't work on a project and move scenes back and forth different Versions of Maya, this is a really bad idea and will result in a lot of problems and frustration. It's a lot better to choose one Maya Version and work with it until the project is finished. Exporting and importing pure geometry as FBX should not be a problem, but don't open complex scenes in other (especially older)  Maya Versions and expect it to work properly.

Hi!

It seems this is a problem where 2 border edges share the same vertices.

A simpler solution to solve the problem is to marquee select both edges (overlayed, shown as one) and use Edit Mesh -> Merge.
