Problem with smoothing

My mesh won't allow me to subdivide or smooth, but it's only a problem on the bottom on the mesh. I've made sure that there aren't any duplicate vertices on the bottom so I'm lost as to why this isn't working. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

It seems you don't understand much about Subd yet, I recommend you watch some Youtube tutorials so this does not happen again.

I don’t mean to be rude but this doesn’t really answer my question. I’m aware that I need supporting edges, but regardless of what I do the bottom faces act like they can’t be manipulated outside of being moved. They act as if they’re sharp all of the time regardless of being subdivided or smoothed. Not even beveling helps. Any help or insight in solving this problem is appreciated.

Well , no problem but from your images all I can see is the mesh was subdived once and that's the correct result.

Please provide more detail if you can.

Change your smooth settings Exponential or Linear

There is nothing wrong with your Maya and the tools. You have way too many edges and faces. That is the reason you were advised by Damaggio to understand topology. the object looks to me like horse neck and head from side view.

You may look on to some tutorials how to model the hose for Chess game.

The smooth tool works as intended for the most part, but what I'm having trouble with is understanding why the faces on the bottom of the mesh don't seem to be affected like the rest of the mesh. They seem to be sharpened without any supporting edges, and I'm not sure why.

The bottom faces of your mesh were reversed, that's  why the corners were hard edges.Under Lighting, leave Two sided Lighting unchecked, also remember to delete the history  before saving.
