Poly ReTopo Error: Cross field computation fails

I have been trying to use the new Retopology tool on a Zbrushed object, I was hoping that I will be able to skip quad drawing all over it however the error ( Poly ReTopo Error: Cross field computation fails ) keeps popping up and my retopology is failing. What could be causing this? I have tried to look it up but it seems like no one had this problem. For reference the model that I'm trying to retopologize is a tree with roots.

I am also having this issue with a mesh exported from Rino as an stl. I'm not having any fails with models created in zbrush or maya so far. I even converted the stl in zbrush to obj and same failure result when attempting remesh or retopo. The mesh is clean.

I did find a youtube video as a workaround that you could use until the real cause is resolved. Check this method on the Maya Learning Channel using Bitfrost; Skip manual mesh cleanup with Bifrost! Prepare a mesh for Remesh and Retopologize even quicker!

I don't have much in the way of a solution, but thanks for the video. That voxelized retopology workflow looks totes amaze!

Why not just use the remesh tool  in Zbrush since you have it already?

This error typically appears when you're working with nonmanifold geometry.  Try running a Mesh > Cleanup in "Select" mode on it with Nonmanifold turned on in the options to find these problem areas so you can fix them.

Or as mentioned by @jillian_mack , you can also use Bifrost to quickly rebuild the mesh without any of those problem areas and then retopo that instead.

So I do not have another 3D program at this time, I am using Maya for school. I am trying to retop an object for hair so I can run some functions on it. However, when I try to use the auto retop tool I either get the "Crossfield error" or a "you can't retop more than 1 object" error. I have made sure to combine all applicable objects, unified them, used the cleanup tool, manually checked to gaps, internal faces and other such non manifold geometry but I keep getting the same errors.
Is there a know solution to this issue, or should I throw in the proverbial towel and manually retop the object?
