Mirroring a mesh that has geometry on both sides of the mirroring axis?

I wasn't exactly sure how to ask this question. I have a character and I need to mirror it over the X axis. However, the character has big thighs so some geometry hangs over the X axis. So I need to mirror the mesh and have the thigh part of it mirror too, but since it's like, inverted, it's behaving strangely.

Thanks for helping me figure this out!

Move everything to the center it would intersect anyways.

If it should intersect bring it back later on.

Oh.. so you're saying to move it all on one side of the axis, mirror it, then move it all back into place?
Sorry I'm just a bit confused haha! Thanks for your help!

Try using Symmetrize (http://help.autodesk.com/view/MAYAUL/2019/ENU/?guid=GUID-EA4AE704-D397-4A1B-A664-3E84EAEB20D9) on localized areas you want to flip back and forth.
