nCloth Not Behaving Correctly

So I have used nCloth quite a lot in my time using Maya over the years and the default values have always served me well. However, shortly after converting to Maya 2017, nCloth isn't behaving as it originally did.

The first image is what I am getting from Maya, notice how the cloth is very stiff and doesn't want to drape down. I've tried playing around with all the nCloth attributes to try and get a better result but nothing I do is working very well.

The second image is the result I'm aiming for. That was achieve in Maya 2017 using the default setting from a video I watched on Youtube.

Hope someone can help out, this is quite frustrating.

Hi!

It looks like you set units to "meter".

Use default units in Maya, although they are labelled "centimeter" they are used as meter in many parts of Maya.

All FX (like nCloth and Bifrost) use "centimeter" as meter.

Hope this get's corrected anytime because it's very confusing.

Just renaming the labels for the units should make it better (don't know why this is not done).

Maybe a developer could respond to this.

Hey,

I have my Units set to 'cm.' I tried switching them to something smaller like 'mm' and I'm still getting the same result. Thanks for the reply though, it is appreciated 🙂

Hi!

Try setting Evaluation Mode to "DG".

If this doesn't help, please upload the scene-file.

Hi,

Thanks for helping me out with this. I switch the Evaluation Mode to DG and it didn't seem to have any effect. The image attached is the result I am continuously getting with just the default settings.

I thought that maybe I might have unintentionally changed some setting in Maya, but when I tried it again on my University's computers I got the same result. I just made a quick project scene with everything set up, if you open up the scene and play the animation hopefully you'll see the issue more clearly.

Thanks again, I appreciate this. It's been driving me crazy.

Hi!

If you scale your objects it's the same as if you start with wrong units.

Your plane has a width of 560 "default" units which results in a width of 560 meter. (Yes, default units although "cm" will be handled as "meter" for simulations)

If you want a cloth object with 560 meter width simulated, this is the correct result.

You can change the behavior by scaling the objects or setting other values for attributes in the nCloth Shapes and the Nucleus node.

Yup, that was the problem. I am stupid. I forgot that my grid setup is so large that when I make something it's actually way larger than it looks.

Thanks a lot for the help 😄
