How to split mesh into different parts and group them?

Hi

I got a character rig into Maya. The model was created as a low poly one in lightwave and I had to convert it appropriately to import it in Maya. Now it comes as a whole mesh in Maya. I'd rather it be separate pieces (head, body, limbs etc) Is there a way to separate the mesh into different parts and group them all together at the end? I need it to be pieces so I can work individually. Alternatively, is there an option to select a portion of the mesh and hide it, leaving visible only the part of interest?

Thank you

Hi!

You can select the faces you want to split, and use the Detach option under Edit Mesh menu, and the Separate option under Mesh menu to make it an independent object. You can then select both of them and group them through the Edit menu. To hide something, select it and press Ctrl+H. To show it again, select in the Outliner and press Shift+H.

Hope it helps!
