Duplicate Special Issues

Hi there. It's been a few years, but I'm getting back into modeling. Most tutorials for character modeling are telling me I should use duplicate special for symmetry and ease.

The problem I have is when I use duplicate special, the normals get reversed on the opposite side, and they meshes don't connect. If I select a vertex it will move with the other, but the object won't translate with the other side.

I've found while trying to extrude and scale along the bottom, they scale independently. For example if I were to select the top four faces, extrude, and scale down, two independant squares would form instead of one larger square.

I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong, I don't think this is standard.

Thanks for any help!

The reversed normals problem can be fixed by going to Viewportmenu -> Lighting -> Two Sided Lighting (Check this option)

Once you check the two sided lighting option, you should be able to see it from both sides.

Okay, thanks! What about the vertices not connecting to each other?

I'm not really sure why it isn't working.. You could try starting a new document and doing it again.

This is how I did mine:

Step 1:

Create a Polygon Cube and give it these settings:

Translate X = 0

Translate Y = 0

Translate Z = 0

Width = 4

Height = 4

Depth = 4

Step 2:

In orthographic front view, go to face mode and delete the left side of the cube.

Step 3:

Go back to object mode. Select the Half that wasn't deleted and Duplicate Special

Now your cube should be working
