Disappearing Objects after opening file

Hello,

I'm having a bit of a technical issue with objects disappearing in one of my models for my Honours Project and was wondering what is causing it? and if there's a way to fix it?

Last night I saved my work and closed the file. No errors, nothing out of the ordinary.

I came back this morning, opened the file and the top half of both of the legs (it's a mech) have disappeared. They're still listed on the outliner but their poly count is zero. Also there weren't any anomolies on the channel tab.

Here's what I've tried;

- Closing and reopening the file.

- Selecting all of the model and exporting it as an obj. and maya binary. I then imported them into a new file but the parts were still invisible.

- Deleting all history, saving then reopening, still nothing.

- I've also tried the method of combining the missing part (via the outliner) with a fresh cube described here, but still to no avail. http://methodj.com/how-to-fix-maya/

Here's what the script editor says when I open the file.

file -f -new;
// Warning: file: C:/Program Files/Autodesk/Maya2015/scripts/startup/rememberViewportSettings.mel line 43: Active stereo does not work with Aero enabled. Active stereo has been disabled. //
// untitled //
doOpenFile ("G:/DD3992 - Honours Project/Old_Models/New_Shipard_Droid_27.2.16/Shipyard_Droid - Version_1.mb");
file -f -options "v=0;" -ignoreVersion -typ "mayaBinary" -o "G:/DD3992 - Honours Project/Old_Models/New_Shipard_Droid_27.2.16/Shipyard_Droid - Version_1.mb";addRecentFile("G:/DD3992 - Honours Project/Old_Models/New_Shipard_Droid_27.2.16/Shipyard_Droid - Version_1.mb", "mayaBinary");
requires -nodeType "mentalrayFramebuffer" -nodeType "mentalrayOptions" -nodeType "mentalrayGlobals" -nodeType "mentalrayItemsList" -dataType "byteArray" "Mayatomr" "2015.0 - 3.12.1.18 ";
# Error: line 1: RuntimeError: file <maya console> line 1: Plug-in, "Mayatomr", was not found on MAYA_PLUG_IN_PATH. #

Please check the Script Editor for details. //

updateRendererUI;

I'm quite stumped so any tips on how to rectify this would be greatly appreciated 🙂

Also if someone could point out 'why' this happens I'll then be able to try to avoid this happening in the future.

Thanks!

If you turn on visibility for the Legs_Low layer, the upper legs will appear.

Hi Jay, your layer for the legs visibility was unchecked thta's why you can't see it, enable all those layers...I'm still checking the file ,I'll get back to you soon.....also delete history constantly and save file as .ma not .mb.

I know about the layers for the lower poly parts, it's the higher poly versions that I'd added detail to that I'm missing seen below.

I have an .fbx file that I'd exported as a test but the topology has been triagulated so I can't really work into it anymore.

I'll just remodel them 😞

Wait sorry, just seen your other reply 🙂

Since it's only the upper legs I could remodel them, I'm just concerned incase other parts start disappearing :s

Thanks for the tips though 🙂

For some reason I was thinking "Low" and "High" as in distance from the ground, and thought you had possibly mixed up your display layers. Never mind!

Hi Jay, please go to Turbosquid and study wireframes from other modelers so you can improve your topology.

You are doing well though , just keep on practicing.

Also, could I ask why saving in .ma format is better?

Just curious 🙂

You cannot open and .mb file in a text editor to modify it, but the .ma you can, therefore if something terrible happens you can try to find the source of the problem and try to fix it.

Thanks for the tips on the arms and legs, I'll get onto them now.
The feet and container have been converted to smooth meshes, hence why they're so dense. Also I put more detail into the low poly container because when I imported it into Substance Painter the normal map didn't bake properly and looked flat, even with the distances set to max, it just wouldn't bake deep enough 😞

I'll be glad when this project is finally finished. Other than this I've had UV's resetting when I've exported it and problems with my workflow. Definately been a learning experience, shame it had to be so frustrating 😄

That's good Jay, yes  3D can be frustrating lots of times  at the beggining but there are rewards later if you stick to it.

Good luck.
