Shelf Tool Name Wrap

Shelf Tool Name Wrap

It would be nice to be able to have a wraparound for the tool names when they're in the shelf. Most people are not going to have an intuitive PNG handy, and sometimes, it would be easier just to have an option to give a descriptive name that can be expressed in more than just 7-8 characters so you don't have to hover over each one and pray the person who wrote it (including yourself) included a tool tip over a tool you don't recognize (anymore)

This is already available when you customize your shelf icons.

Right click on the shelf icon created, edit pop up window appears, enter your label name, you can also upload a hand made icon.

I know that the Icon Label exists. My issue is that I'm effectively limited to 7-8 characters. I want to be able to have the Icon Label wrap around so I can have longer names that I can more easily read.

shelf.jpgOkay, I understand.

The easiest way is to do a cool colorful BMP 32x32 icon design in Photoshop, I have made many for myself.

Well, good luck with your request.

It's not exactly what you're asking for, but maybe you'll find this useful:

https://zewt.github.io/zMayaTools/tool-shelf-menus.html

It lets you add shelves as menus, so you can use long, descriptive names for them.  "Popup Menu Items" in the shelf editor can also be used to organize them into submenus (that you can also tear off).  I use this instead of the actual shelf panel for almost everything.  The shelf UI just doesn't scale once you have hundreds of scripts built up over years...
