remove jitter from curves

remove jitter from curves

A feature in the graph editor to remove jitter/shake/noise from a curve. This would be distinctly different to 'simplify curve' or 'resample curve' as it would keep the same keys, but smooth them out so there's less noise, and the curve becomes smoother.

Hey @userX4542, thanks for the idea! We're actively investigating adding Butterworth filtering, as well as adding more intelligent curve simplification at the moment, but I really like the video you linked and I'd love to understand which items from that drop down would be most useful for you?

Thanks!

@medryks That's great news. Personally I like the butterworth and smooth options. This is particularly useful for camera tracks that need to be smoothed out. A slider to blend between the two is also very handy.

What is less important to me is a type of scaling effect where all the point gravitate towards an average because maya already kinda has that feature. It's more important that the curves move towards a smoothed curve/ derivative of the curve like in the video.

As a general side note, I really like that in the maya modelling tools, whenever you create a bevel or extrusion or something like that, a live floating option box appears until you press enter. So in the case of a graph editor tool, the same could apply. So it has a standard smooth, with a seperate window that pops up with a slider and some options. And when you press enter it closes again.

I hope that makes sense.

Hey @userX4542, this all totally makes sense, thanks for clarifying! Good to know where you find the most value. Also, what do you think of having all of these tools in a single UI? Can you see some value to having them separate out, or is having it a floating or dockable single UI where you can switch between all the filters more usable?

I totally know what you mean about the floating tools, and I love that idea! Means you can just hit a key, make a change, hit the key again and keep working without going through menus or icons. What other functionality in the graph editor could benefit from something like that too?

Thanks Callum!

Hey @medryks thanks so much for taking the time to reply and showing interest. It gives me hope! haha

I would personally like it as a button in a dropdown window in the 'graph editor curves menu' that then opens up a window as mentioned, with options such as different smoothing options/parameters. As compact as possible. A whole new dockable window seems a bit overkill and could fill screen space unnecessarily.

In terms of using temporary parameter windows for other tools in the graph editor, the main others would be 'resample curve', 'simplify curve', 'curve smoothness'

I think it could be useful to have them for translating and scaling keys too. At the moment it's still a bit tricky to translate or scale keys precisely. A 'translate selected keys button' that opens up a window with parameters would be very neat. (however softimage has translate and scaling inputs always available which might be even better)

Thanks again!

Great, but also make possible ADD JITTER or noise to curves, maybe in a procedural nondestructive way.

Sometimes curves are to clean and need artistic noise. Imagine a vibrating space craft.

We added the butterworth and simplify filters in 2019.  We're now tracking how people like those & if we should add other filters as well.

Been trying out the new filter recently. It works well but it would be nice if it could preserve the existing keyframes. It currently creates completely new keys along a smoothed curved. I've also had a few crashed when changing the tangents in preview mode. Maybe something for the future?
