Maya for iPadOS

Maya for iPadOS

Autodesk has brought a few apps from the desktop to iPadOS making it easier for artists and studios to be more productive while providing flexibility and creativity like never before. With that said I’m surprised Autodesk hasn’t invested R&D revenue into bringing other pro apps like Maya to iPadOS. The library directory used by Maya on MacOS could be changed to use the “Files” directory on iPadOS. Also with the power of having the Apple M1 silicon chip in the 2021 iPad Pro that’s outshined Intel’s most powerful desktop class chip and having 16GB RAM, upwards of 2TB storage and Thunderbolt 3 there’s more than enough power under the hood for Autodesk’s Maya. Please consider making this software available through the App Store on iPadOS. There’s over 45 million iPads around the world in the hands of consumers. Even if 25% of those are actual artists that’s a huge untapped revenue stream that Autodesk is missing out on that a competitor could gobble up.

This will never happen. Remember when Autodesk panicked and stopped officially supporting macOS (Alias, Vred) just because Apple didn’t officially support OpenGL anymore? Autodesk is run by suits completely out of touch with the reality of technology progressing

I recall when Autodesk (formally Alias Wavefront) transitioned from Power Animator to Maya. Even in those early days there were people saying they would never offer it on low cost consumer desktop PCs over using Silicon Graphics Irix toaster workstations that cost upwards of $50,000.00 per unit. Then after it was available on the PC it was that they would never offer it for laptop users with people claiming insufficient processing power even though it had yet to be tested on the hardware. I recall comments like “who would ever want to animate or model on a laptop?…it just can’t be done….it’s insanity!”. Now we’re a the tablet stage of this journey. It’s got the power, it just needs Autodesk to invest in the R&D to get it done.

Sadly it will take AD at least 5 years to make a dodgy port to ARM. AD jumped at the first chance to drop macOS like a hot potato and to not even offer Alias, Mudbox or VRed anymore. Chances are AD just wait for an excuse to put Maya on that list. I doubt ADs suits have plans for iPadOS. They have completely dropped the ball on the basic development of Maya for 15 years straight. Maya must be the most stagnant 3D software currently. To be fair even pixologic doesn’t seem to be interested in an iPad port of zbrush which is clearly an untapped market for them since zBrush is actually affordable and doesn’t force you into subscription

Having Maya for Ipad would be very much appreciated by the community as there is no strong software on the app store for modeling. I've been looking for strong alternatives to maya on the App store and can't seem to find any.
