As mentioned in other posts, and par for the course. It's 2021. Every other modelling program has Maya beat in spades when it comes to controlling your smoothing options. Vertex Weight shading modifiers, are being used heavily in Blender, and 3DS max has to my knowledge the best Smoothing group control and vertex weighted modifier in the industry currently. Blender's is not far from it and quite useful. I find my self often taking work out of Maya into Blender to touch up the poor shading that we're left with on low to mid poly objects. There are some intricate shapes where the default shading just doesn't cut it. A Vertex weighted / smoothing group modifier would be amazing in Maya. It already has such powerful modelling tools in many regards but it seems so weird that it lacks on this front.
