Hobbyist/Indie pricing for Maya

Hobbyist/Indie pricing for Maya

(Copied from original User Voice forum)

"If you're a student, you get Maya free for three years. After that, there is a considerable jump in price - thousands of dollars.

I'd like to see low cost options for those who don't make any money with Maya, with increments for those who do, based on the amount of money they make with it. The game engine Unity3D works this way. It's free until you make $100k per year. Unreal charges 5% of your income, but only if you make a certain amount.

A sliding scale for Maya would allow students to continue to use the product long after they leave school."

"How about an indie version for just a dollar a day that sat between Maya LT and Full Maya. Include things like MASH, The Modeling toolkit, Some of the more basic UV workflows, The animation timeline without some of the more advanced features. Perhaps disable the use of mel scripting and only give us a few of the more used sculpting tools. Limit the amount of money we are allowed to make per year with this license. Much the same way there is an indie license with Unity or Unreal.

Support export and import shaders to work with substance, Unreal, Unity. Handle all types of 3D file formats and work with any renderer we choose as well as have a native renderer like the arnold plugin included with the package.

A lot of people cannot afford Maya and this provides at least an entry-level animation and modeling toolset that goes above gaming assets in Maya LT but below full blown studio level licenses."

an Indie price would be very much appreciated.

like SideFX, Allegorithmic , etc.

don't think this is an unreasonable suggestion when looking at competitors who often have Indie-level licenses. Please consider

Maya needs to be competitive in every area. So yeah of course +1 vote for this.

I think a system like Substance is really good. you buy Maya and belong to you, and you get update for one year. after one year you still can use the software but you cant get new updates. only if you subscribe for one year you continue to get new updates. and the price for upgrade suppose to be half the price.

with this I believe a lot of people will move to use Maya not Maya LT

what we need a new system for payment. people still prefer Perpetual licenses.
and they will 100% upgrade when they see new things in Maya like new Boolean system etc...

so I hope Autodesk break the yearly system and add new opportunity for the customers.

Yup!  I'd be up for this- toss in a version of Max as well!

I subscribe to SideFX for Houdini Indie and it's quickly become my main app.  There are some think Maya is easier/more suited for (humanIK comes to mind).  I also use MayaLT but not being able to tap scripting and work with alembic makes integration w/ Houdini a bit more difficult than it needs to be and makes it an occasional purchase as opposed to an annual one.

I dislike this idea.  The current system does what it needs to do.

I know several people, who just can't afford this Maya pricing and then are forced switching to other packages like Blender or Houdini. So I think many more people would stay with Maya and this helps on the market, too.

Also Photoshop was expensive in the beginning and now they are a worldwide everywhere which made possible an affordable pricing.

And on the other hand, why are student version free? Charge just a small tiny bit for educational versions (like vray, mari, zbrush do) and a bit money comes to make this possible.

this sounds good I would say it's fine it they remove mel in favor of python for scripting, leave mel for full maya.

Nope, that makes absolutely no sense.

I think if the price was lower it should generate more free tutorials on youtube. Now days it starts to get much easier to find tutorials for Blender, since its more new game developers/designers that have time to do tutorials for it.

Autodesk needs to expand Maya Indie to all areas asap! This also means they can give up on LT and save on development costs.
I've created this post in the LT forum for anyone wanting to make this issues as visible to Autodesk as possible!

I am happy to confirm that our pilot program worked and we've quietly emailed our pilot program to let them know the good news.  We will be going global, offering Maya Indie wherever we have an eStore across the world starting on August 7th in just a few weeks.

Thanks for hanging in there and all the votes, we've been fighting the good fight to get everything ready for you.

Enjoy!
