Deactivate fields after values are entered

Deactivate fields after values are entered

Ever since Maya 2008 I've noticed that when I type a numerical value in a field--whether it be in the channel box, the current-time field, or basically any field for entering a value--the field remains active even after I hit Enter or Return. And it won't deactivate unless I click in the viewport to deselect the field. As an animator I find this function almost useless, and very annoying. It adds an extra step to perform hundreds of times throughout the day, and it really slows down my workflow. I almost never want to keep a field active unless I'm fine-tuning the value of a key and experimenting with different numbers in rapid succession (and I seldom do that). Maybe for lighting and rendering this might be useful, but nearly never for animation. The worst part is I often forget to deactivate a field, and then try to advance the frame with [Ctrl->] and wonder why nothing is happening till I notice that I've been inadvertently typing [>>>>>>>>>>] in the channel box for the past ten seconds. In Maya 7 (back in my school days) it wasn't like this, and it was wonderful. Please, for the love of god, take away this annoying functionality that's been plaguing me for the past decade! (Either that, or give me back Softimage.)

Or have I overlooked a setting in Preferences that disables it?

This was changed a number of years ago to respond to user feedback.  I know it can be confusing at first, but the enter key on your number pad area will do as you're describing: retain focus.  That allows you to try several numbers quickly and settle on the one you like.

The main keyboard enter key will do what you're asking: enter a number but NOT retain focus.

Thanks for taking the time to enter this!
