Hello I always have problems with xgen density maps. I paint a black and white map with no blur on the edges, when I update there are some hairs on the black areas too. Few hairs but they are present.
I followed a tutorial that suggested to paint maps in mudbox and so I did. But the problem is still there, even if I paint in ptex. Is someone experiencing the same problem ?
Thank you
Ray

The only issue with density maps painted in Maya is the fact that the soft falloff brush only paints true black at the very center of the brush. It looks like it's paint black with soft edges but the falloff actually starts right at the center. It's best to use a hard edged brush then blur the edges.
Make sure the brush opacity is not set to a lower value as well.
The falloff issue is not really a problem in mudbox if you are painting true black, but brush opacity and the falloff settings could still cause issues if the values are preventing true black from being painted in the map.

Hello! I know this thread says solved and I'm 2 years late but I had the same issue. I painted and painted and painted pure black with the hard brush in Maya, checked the map in Photoshop... at the end the answer was to turn off the Stylus Pressure, -.-
keep only fur uv set in mesh on which fur is grown. if there are multiple uv maps, the maps wont give needed result what i found recently
Thanks for coming back to say what fixed it, been going crazy all night with the same issue! Pen Pressure fixed it. Thanks god 😄
