Why is Maya appending this prefix to all my objects?

I imported an .obj file and now every object, material, and texture has the name appended to the front. Even if I try to rename things it won't go away. This is super annoying, how do I get rid of it?

Hi @Anonymous

Were all of those objects imported with the obj or are they new things you are creating?

You might want to check your namespace settings for when you import and if need be disable them.

I just imported a basic obj and then created some cubes, cameras and materials after and had no issues like this. If you have steps to reproduce this issue please let me know!

I think you imported the objects. When you do this maya inserts a namespace in front of the name. The ":" is the separator. You should be able to rename the objects.

This software is horrible, why would there be default settings to include specialized functions?

What are namespaces? Why do I want to permanently append names to every object in my scene? Why is it set as a default forcing everyone who doesn't have any use for it go on a wild goose chase just to figure out what's going on?

I was finally able to remove the prefix by doing these steps:

 1) Windows > General Editors > Namespace Editor

2) Select the namespace in the list and click 'Delete'

3) You will be prompted with a warning asking what to do with the objects within the namespace, select either "Merge with Root" or "Merge with Parent" (if you click "Delete" it will delete all your objects)

4) Complain about it on the forums
