Problems with Xgen naming conventions......

I am trying to follow a tutorial. When the guy creates a new collection while highlighting a piece of geometry, the collection appears as whatever he had written, which was just "collection". When I do the same thing, it attaches the name of the piece of geometry to the front of the new collection name. So if I am creating a new collection on a piece of geometry named Scalp_1 and naming the collection "Collection_1", the collection will appear named as "Scalp_1:Collection_1", rather than just as the name I chose "Collection_1". If I named the description as "Description_1", it will appear as "Scalp_1:Description_1" in the Outliner.

I think this is causing me problems later on when I try to add additional descriptions to do the collection. It gives me errors such at this:

I have tried manually renaming the Collection in the Outliner, and even if I am able to add a new description, it does not add hair roots to the selected geometry. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks.

Hi @KyleG87

Thanks for posting! 🙂 After speaking with my colleagues, it appears there is something misplaced in the Xgen folder. Would it be possible to delete the folder (or setting up a new project folder to load defaults) and continuing there? If that error continues, let us know and I can take a closer look at it 🙂

Hey thanks for replying. I'm trying to just name objects in a new project file and don't seem to be having any problems. So is the project file I'm working on just corrupted or something?

Which folder are you talking about deleting, Documents>maya>projects>default>xgen? Just delete the whole thing?

So I just deleted the Collection entirely within my project scene. I created two spheres and began a collection on it and just named it "collection" and "description1" and "description2" and it worked fine.oyvey1.jpg

Now when I try the same thing on the geometry OBJs I'm importing from Zbrush, it is attaching the geometry naming conventions again. So it seems the problem is linked with my character's geometry itself. Is there a way around this?

Hi @KyleG87

This is most likely due to the naming conventions being saved when you export/import from Zbrush.

Simple way to fix this would be to delete the history on the objects, export them as objs and reimport them into Maya then try applying the collection to it.

Please let me know if this helps or if you need any more assistance!
