Problem with Texel Density tool

Hello community!

I just getting lost in texel density... When I select any UV shell and press Get Texel Density in UV Toolkit it shows me the number (for example 25 px/unit). I worked in centimeters, so I understood, that texel density for selected UV shell is 25 px/cm. When I change units to meters in Preferences and try to get texel density it shows me the same number! And it's totally confused me...
Please tell me someone how I can know the real texel density of my UV shell in px/cm or px/m?
Thank you in advance!

Hi @rouslan.bordug

What tool are you using to get the Texel Density?

By default I don't believe Maya has a tool to display texel density.

Hello Sean! It's default tool in Maya UV Toolkit in Transform section. You need to select UV shell, enter the map size and press Get button. But the problem is I mentioned before - if I switch to other units it shows me the same result always.

Hi @rouslan.bordug

Ah ok. The problem is you can't change the settings while already having an existing object.

For example, a base cube will have the same result if you try it with centimeters and meters. However if you change to meters, delete the cube then make a new one and check the texel density it will adjust appropriately.

Please let me know if this works for you!

@sean.heasley  Thank you very much for you reply. I checked it with cube and it's really works as you wrote before. I tried to do it with my object which is in FBX format and it's not works. First I opened Maya, then switched units to meters and imported object. The UV Toolbox shows me the same number as was when the units was centimeters.
May be you have the solution how to see different texel density when we already have the unwrapped objects?
P.S. I understand that it's no problem to translate meters to centimeters and back, but how we can guess which units shows in this Texel Density tool (because as I mentioned before when you switch units in Preferences the result in TD not changes)?
Thank you!

Hi @rouslan.bordug

It is most likely showing the CM result as that is what Maya is set to by default so unless you changed it before modeling your object that should be it. If you aren't sure. You can make another object of similar size and check the density of those shells compared to your object.

Thank you! Probably it's the fastest way 🙂
Best wishes!
