PaintEffects + Maya 2017?

Is PaintEffects not rendering in Arnold in Maya 2017?

We added some Painteffects, but a) in Viewport no textures show (e.g. tree leaves are white) even though texturing is on and other textures show, and b) in Arnold the Painteffects geometry does not show at all.

Is there a work around?

Are they converted to polygons already?

No, just freshly painted. What is the next steps? We can see them in the Viewport 2.0, but not in Arnold. Also there does not seem to be textures (e.g. leaves are just white boxes) in Viewport.

Just converted the Painteffects to Polygon and they show up in Arnold and the Viewport now. Thanks.

However, in Arnold, any surface that has an alpha/mask texture, shows up black instead of transparent.

Any work around?

Well now would be the time to start shading the paint effects using arnold shaders, the paint effects is quite old and was designed for Maya software.

You might need to study the shader connections as it is now and rebuild in Arnold  or just troubleshoot the alpha texture + transparency which is very important to master in any 3D app.

Ok, but they are already textured. Any file texture with transparency shows up black in Arnold / the new Maya 2016. Is that intentional or a bug?

How do we get the transparency to work? This seems to happens with and without Paint Effects.

Well ,I don't use Arnold so I don't want to speculate to much here and lead you in the wrong path, if you want you can do a screen grab of the shading network at 2K resolution from your screen and post it here.

Please find attached an example shader network. It really happens with any shader that has a transparency (Lambert, Phong, etc.)

The transparent areas appear completely black in Arnold. In viewport, they appear transparent / correct.

Thanks for any tips.

Okay, yeah you gonna have to do some reading on this, go to the Arnold docs and study the standard shader, also there must be some basic stuff on Autodesk learning channel and also Arnold tutorials on You tube, I'm sure you'll find the right way to connect the leaf transparency into the arnold shader...this is really basic stuff and should be easily found in one of these places.

Good luck.

Thanks, Damaggio.

Yes, this looks like a "bug" to us. 🙂 (or at least it's not obvious why by default transparency would mean black)

Is there somebody here from Autodesk?

It's just standard transparency and Arnold behaves differently by default than Viewport and other renders before.

I'm not from Autodesk but there are support people watching the forums, if no one chimes in you can try to send a private message to one of the Tech support fellas.

You can try to reach pshwayka on the forums too, he's pretty handy with answers.

Hi

Did you clear the Opaque flag on the polygon objects?

The other thing to check is the Auto Transparency depth. If you have lots of transparent objects in front of each other, at some point you might hit the max depth.

Thanks

Stephen

And also, here's a tutorial on "Rendering Opacity Maps with Paint Effects"

Hi Stephen,

Yes, Arnold opaque flag is off (btw why is default on in Arnold if transparencies show in Viewport by default? Why would somebody add a transparency texture, but to keep the object opaque?)

Unfortunately, one object still is completely black while the other object has some texture color, but does not show the opacity/shape when rendered in Arnold. Both work great in the Viewport.

See my other email and private message.

Thanks in advance for helping.
