Maya paint layers? blending multiple texture layers/projections?

Is there an easy way to paint a mask to blend two or more texture layers within Maya 2017?
We would like to see the look in real-time blending two or more textures.
We created a work around by painting on the transparency attribute and then re-wiring the transparency as alpha into a layered shader.
Is there a better way to do this?
A way to select which layer to affect within Maya paint would be great. We only see a standard list of attributes though.
We need to blend together several different image camera projections onto a single piece of geometry.
Any tips?
