Opening Maya 2018 freezes my Computer

I was always able to open Maya 2017 just fine but for some reason, attempting to open Maya 2018 (student version) makes my computer freeze each time and never actually opens. I have to restart my computer every time. This happens even when I have nothing else open. Only the Output Window appears and it's blank.

Hi @Anonymous and welcome to the community!

Its possible you may have a hardware/driver issue with 2018.

What are the hardware specs of your machine?

Steps to find your pc specs can be found here!

Also, what GPU are you using and are the drivers up to date?

Steps to update your drivers can be found here!

Please let me know if anything changes!

Thank you for your prompt reply. I've attached an image showing my machine specs. I've just ensured that my drivers are up to date and tried to open Maya 2018 again but I'm getting the same error. It just seems to open the output window.

Hello,

Thank you for your prompt reply. I've attached a screenshot of my machine specs and ensured that my drivers were up to date. I tried starting Maya 2018 again and my computer crashed again. I'm still not sure what the issue is.

Hi @Anonymous

Thanks for posting your pc specs!

Unfortunately that doesn't show your GPU so when you get a chance can you please let me know what GPU you are using?

Hi @Anonymous

Ah ok your GPU is not on our certified hardware list so its possible that may be why you're experiencing these crashes.

Also, have there been any major OS or firewall/anti-virus updates to your PC that could be causing this issue?

Finally, you may want to perform a clean uninstall/reinstall of Maya and make sure you install Maya as an admin and whenever you go to launch Maya make sure to select Run as Admin.

Please let me know if anything changes!

I reinstalled Maya 2018 and it is up and running. I had it running once before and it started causing those issues so hopefully they don't happen again.

Hello,

I'm having this issue again and I think I will give up on Maya 2018 until I get a new desktop computer. Is it possible at all to open a scene created in 2018 and save as a scene that can be opened in 2017? I think if I re-install Maya 2018 again, then it will work for a while but then it goes back to crashing and then outright refusing to open the program.

Hi @Anonymous

It's not recommended to go change versions while working on a project.

That said, if you save a file in .MA (ASCII) format you should be able to open it in 2017.

Please let me know if that works for you!
