Hoping someone from Autodesk can provide some information about this.
Those of us in the VR/AR industry are rapidly embracing the glTF 2.0 file format.
There are too many reasons for me to list so I will link to these:
Why we should all support glTF 2.0 as THE standard asset exchange format for game engines
Sites like Sketchfab are embracing this format and it is gaining momentum.
However, right now, creating glTF assets is very difficult-- there are a few ways of converting existing formats but most of them are extremely cumbersome, require other software (Blender, for example), and are generally not very robust yet.
I will speak on behalf of us in the VR/AR industry in saying that we really need the support of companies like Autodesk to help us.
Seeing as Autodesk is listed as one of the companies supporting glTF, I would love to know what kind of timeline we're dealing with for getting native export support from Maya and other 3d packages.
Thanks!

Hi @Anonymous and welcome to the community!
This is a great suggestion! I dabbled in VR my last year of college and I totally understand why devs are embracing the gITF format!
That said, I highly recommend making a post on the Maya Idea Station! This is a great resource for users like yourself to post ideas for updates and or future versions of Maya and the developers consistently check this board and take all suggestions seriously!
I hope this helps you but feel free to let me know if you need any more information or assistance!

Coincidentally, as my coworkers and I were discussing this very issue, someone at Facebook tweeted about this:
https://github.com/facebookincubator/FBX2glTF
Still very much a work-in-progress, but promising.

Saw your issue in the git repo. I'll follow up there.

Check out Verge3D for Maya plug-in. At the moment, this is the most advanced glTF 2.0 exporter capable of handling Arnold Standard Surface materials, skeletal animation, shape targets (morphing) and other things.

Lol, this thread started in 2017 and glTF is still not supported? I wrote a fairly functional gltf importer for my own engine in under a week, this is kinda ridiculous for a company with dedicated full time devs.
