Maya symmetry problems

Hi, my model's symmetry is broken somehow...  If I activate symmetry on the x axis and hover over a random face, the face selection turns red but isn't selected on the other side like it should be. (see pic links)

Some faces are red when selected and some are correct and blue. If I marquee select one side, lots of faces are randomly selected and lots arent selected from the mirrored side. I've tried everything from merging the verts and even reinstalling maya but that didnt help.  Can anyone have a look at my scene I've attached to see if my model's symmetry is broken?
