Maya keeps crashing when I open up my (assignment)file

Hi there,

I saved a project which I opened up successfully about an hour ago.

I didn't change much, if anything, just some rotations of an object in graph editor.

However, now Maya crashes when I try to open up my project.

I have changed the Preferences back to default and no luck.

The command line shows that the file is read in 1.3seconds so why is it not opening I wonder.

Please advise as this is my assignment and I need it working today!!

I have attached the file.

What is in the command lineWhat is in the command line

Hi @Anonymous

I tested your scene files and had no issues opening them, making changes or rendering them.

@mspeer made a really good suggestion. There has been a known issue render layer preferences so you'll want to make sure you're on Render Setup and not Legacy Render Layers.

This can be found in the Rendering tab under Windows->Settings/Preferences->Preferences.

Hi Sean
Thanks for the follow up.
Were you able to render successive frames or just individual frames? I can render individual frames sometimes, it's when they are a sequence that Maya cops out.
I will be back at my PC tomorrow so I can check th setting. Thanks to @mspeer too. I'll let you know how I get on.

Sinéad

Hi @Anonymous

Yes I rendered sequences. I rendered 20+ frames no problem as well as a dozen stills but had no crashes or errors.

Hey @Anonymous

Just wanted to check in, any changes with this issue?

Hi Sean,

There are no changes. I checked the GPU requirements and I have a NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060.

I have checked the Render Settings and they have always been as they should be. Please see below.

Rendering as Render Setup not layerRendering as Render Setup not layer

My assignment is to be handed in this week. What can I do or what is Autodesk recommending?

Regards, Sinead

Hi @Anonymous

Thanks for trying those steps.

At this point I'd recommend you perform a clean uninstall/reinstall of Maya. This should completely reset your Maya to default and from here you can try opening the files.

Also, by chance do you have another computer/laptop you could try opening these files on?

Hi Sean,

Would you try and render this Maya project file please? It rendered the first few images there and when I changed the Physical Sky Environment settings it only rendered two images.

(For some reason my HigherCamera has deleted out of that FOS project I sent last week)

Regarding a laptop/computer, I have a MacBook Pro 2015 model but it is not good for processing graphics on. I bought the PC I am using specifically for Animation(it cost £1,000).

Hi @Anonymous

Sure thing.

I just tried rendering 10 frames via Render Sequence from all 3  cameras you have in the scene and I had no issues with any of them.

Hi @Anonymous

Ah that's not ideal. You could try that Mac just for the hell of it but I still recommend you perform a clean uninstall since this seems to be an issue specifically with your Maya and/or PC.

Hi Sean,

Ok, will try that now.

Do I need to only keep the maya/projects files and delete the rest?

The step 4 of that Performing a Clean Uninstall is confusing as it says to remove any residual files but not to empty the folders. Are they not the same thing?

I have no other Autodesk programs on my PC.

Thanks,

Sinead

Hi @Anonymous

Yes you have the right idea. Save your projects folder so you don't lose any of your work or project scenes. It's also worth backing up your Projects folder as a whole so I'd recommend making a copy of that and pasting it on your desktop or another location you won't forget about.

From there continue you the uninstall process as normal.

Hi Sean,

I tried rendering the project FOS (starting at 16.25) and again Maya stopped rendering at frame 189(finishing 21:30).

I tried rendering from 189 - 430 this morning(starting at 11:15)  and again it crashed and Maya closed at frame 191(11:18).

What else am I supposed to do?

I specifically bought a machine to carry out rendering like this  and has a more than adequate graphics card, I have re-installed the software, I have given Autodesk the project file to see if there is something wrong with my model; and again Maya is crashing with no solution.

Can you please try rendering from frame 0-430 of this project using the Maya Student 2018 edition?

Otherwise as above, what am I supposed to do next?

Sit around and cross my fingers, hoping that Maya will open or literally render each of the remaining 430-189 = 241 frames one by one? Because there is no other solution being put forward.

I have to use this software for the next 18months as part of my degree course and to be honest, I am not very happy or satisfied with this.

Regards,

Sinead

Hi @Anonymous

Thanks for your patience and I understand how frustrating this must be.

I'm passing this thread and your file along to our QA team so they can try to reproduce the crashes with a student license of Maya.

In the meantime, did you have a chance to try this on your Mac to see if it renders at all?

Also while there aren't any reports being generated, can you check to see if there is a crash log?

It's usually in a path like this:

C:\Users\Login_Name\AppData\Local\Temp

Also, have you tried unloading updates and working on different versions of Maya? So instead of 2018 update 4 work just on 2018 or even try 2017?

Hi Sean,

Thanks for checking in.

I got the render to work by changing the image resolution output to match the other sequences that did work.

I am not sure why this would cause Maya to crash so badly though?

I had to stay away from Maya for a bit as it was bringing me out in a cold sweat.

I will check the crash folders you mentioned, although I don't think anything was stored there as I remember checking that folder before.

I have written my solution in my Animation workbook which I will share when I get on my PC.

I didn't try on my Mac as the fan would start even if I was just applying a few textures(in a previous project).

Did the QA team come back with anything?

Thanks,

Sinead

Hi @Anonymous

Thanks for the update!

They did test it but unfortunately were not able to get Maya to crash.

When you get a chance please do post that solution you found as I'd like to get to the bottom of this for future reference!
