Maya keeps crashing when I open up my (assignment)file

Hi there,

I saved a project which I opened up successfully about an hour ago.

I didn't change much, if anything, just some rotations of an object in graph editor.

However, now Maya crashes when I try to open up my project.

I have changed the Preferences back to default and no luck.

The command line shows that the file is read in 1.3seconds so why is it not opening I wonder.

Please advise as this is my assignment and I need it working today!!

I have attached the file.

What is in the command lineWhat is in the command line

Hi @Anonymous

Thanks for attaching the file!

I was able to open it with no issues so it's something on your machines end. By chance are you on a Dell machine?

There's been issues like this in the past and we have an article on it here!

Also, I saved the file in ma(ASCII) format and went ahead and exported everything as an fbx so if the scene file doesn't work you can try importing the fbx into a new empty scene file.

The files are attached to this post.

Hi Sean, thanks for the quick reply.

When I renamed the file to a shorter string, it worked ok. I thought this had solved it.

Then I tried to open up the file again this morning, the same thing happened.

I am on an Asus machine actually? With a Windows 10 Home operating system, see below details.Operating SystemOperating System

How do I export as an fbx?

Thanks,

Sinead

Hi @Anonymous

Have you had a chance to try opening the MA file I sent you?

To export as fbx you need to go to Windows->Settings/Prefs->Plug-in Manager and make sure the FBX plug-in is enabled.

Once that's done you can select everything and export as fbx but I already did that for you with the FBX file you should see in that folder I sent in my previous post.

If you open a blank new maya scene, go to File->Import and select the fbx file I sent you.

Hi Sean,

Thanks for your reply.

There was no fbx file in the files you included in the last email - both were Maya ASCII files.

See attached printscreen - I renamed one to be AutodeskSave as I did not want to write over my own version.

AutodeskSave.PNGCustomer Files_Autodesk.PNG

I still don't understand why my file would not open and/or would only open when I renamed it.

I'll try exporting as fbx.

I want to use the fbx for importing into Resolume and TouchDesigner as my source image.

Thanks,

Sinead

Hi Sean,

I tried to make sure the FBX Plug-in is selected and I could not find it in Windows->Preferences->Settings.

There is no Plug-in drop down selection, see attached printscreen and I also clicked through the drop-down selection, in particular the UI interface drop down; to no avail.Where is FBX settingWhere is FBX setting

I can see that your advice on the location is from an article dated May 11th 2016.

(https://knowledge.autodesk.com/support/maya/learn-explore/caas/CloudHelp/cloudhelp/2016/ENU/Maya/fil... you kindly provide an update on where this selection is in Maya 2018?

Thanks,

Sinead

Hi @Anonymous

The "3d object" in your first screenshot is probably the fbx file it just looks like another program is set to the default so it shows it as that instead of a Maya icon.

As for the plug-in manager, you actually opened the settings when the plug-in windows is below the settings tab like in this screenshot:

Hi Sean,

Unfortunately this is happening more regularly now and particularly when I am rendering using a Batch Sequence.

For example it takes 3 attempts at opening up the same file before it appears.

I am rendering using the Arnold Renderer and I use Render all render views as per point 3. of Autodesk's instruction.

https://knowledge.autodesk.com/support/maya/learn-explore/caas/CloudHelp/cloudhelp/2017/ENU/Maya/fil...

I am really close to the end of my animation so I would really appreciate if you would let me know what is "wrong" with my file. I appreciate the outliner is quite busy but I've taken all the complicated animation out of the file so it is only the camera that is animated.

Hi @Anonymous

I'm currently traveling back from Montreal to Boston so I may not have time to look at the file before the weekend but I will 100% look at it first thing Monday if I can't get to it today.

Hi Sean,

Thank you.

I am having a similar issue when I use MASH; even when I export as an Alembic file.

I have put it in a separate post.

Thanks,

Sinead

Hi Sean, the rendering is also crashing to a very dramatic extent.

I tried to render my scene last night from 0-411 frames selecting only "Add to Render View" instead of adding all Layers and All Cameras. I gave the file extensions FOS in case a longer string was causing issues. However(again) this morning Maya had crashed and had only rendered to Frame 187.

(I had no other programmes running on my PC).

I have included the Render settings for you below.

This morning I tried to render from 187-199 - again Maya crashed and only rendered 3 images(187-189).

I tried again for 4frames and again Maya crashed just before the last frame and only rendered 190-192.

This is extremely frustrating. There is no error log report sent back to Autodesk or bug report filled out.

When I batch rendered beforehand(leaving an ugly Arnold watermark on my animation) there were no issues like this and there was a lot more animation in the scene.

Would someone please explain why this is happening?

I would appreciate if they would not send me an .fbx file with everything running smoothly..

That does not help me.

My PC was advised by my Programme director and has the following specs.

Tryingto render from 187-199Tryingto render from 187-199Only Rendering to RenderViewOnly Rendering to RenderViewTrying to Render from 190-193Trying to Render from 190-193Render SettingsRender Settings

Just to follow on  - I tried to fix the problem by following the instructions regarding Frequent crashing with Maya at https://knowledge.autodesk.com/support/maya/troubleshooting/caas/sfdcarticles/sfdcarticles/Constant-...

I changed the preferences to default(renaming to OldPrefs) and I changed the rendering to Open GL - Strict.

This made no difference and again the rendering finished after 3 frames.

Hi @Anonymous

Sorry for all the delays in my posts!

I'm back in the Boston office and was able to open up your scene and render everything with no issues.

It's possible this may be a GPU issue on your end. What GPU are you using and is the driver version the same as our certified hardware list?

You can find our certified hardware list here!

Hi @sean.heasley

Thanks for your reply, I hope you had a nice time in Boston!

However the issue is that I do not know if Maya will or will not open my scene.

Sometimes it does; sometimes it doesn't. Usually it takes 3 rounds of trying to open a scene. The first two rounds will involve the computer to freezing and needing to go to Ctrl - Alt- Delete and start all over again. Is this really supposed to happen?

Do you want me to send you a screencast of how many iterations I need to go through before Maya decides to open up?

My main questions are:

As per my last messages, Maya is rendering for some of my projects and for all of others(when it decides to open my projects and not crash.

(for the example screenshots I already showed, it rendered from 0-186, then it decided to only render 3 frames for the same project(no changes made to anything); and now it won't render at all).

I want to render frames 0-340 of FMS project using SideCamera; frames 322-430 of FCS project using EndSequenceCam; and frames 0-430 of the FOS project using HigherCamera.

Would you try rendering at least 20frames of these projects using a Maya student edition software please?

I will check the GPU issue you have mentioned.

If I cannot get this problem fixed(I have spent about 20hours of my time trying to fix it); and since you are saying it works fine for you; what else can I do? This project is a result of 4months full time work and I cannot start again.

Thanks, Sinead

Hi @Anonymous

Sure thing! I'll take a look at these and mess around with rendering them while you try changing your drivers.

Obviously Maya shouldn't be behaving this way but it's a wide topic that can have a variety of issues causing it and ways to solve it.

Another thing you can do to make sure it isn't a problem with your Maya is to try rendering simple scenes. You have these examples you sent me that are causing problems but if you make a new scene with basic shapes and render does anything go wrong?

That said, if Maya is crashing while simply loading the scene files it is most likely a GPU issue, hardware issue and/or issue with your Maya itself. Hence why we want to see what happens when you change your drivers.

I'll keep testing these scenes and update back here if anything changes or when you get back to me with your driver change!

Hi Sean,

Thanks for your speedy reply!

I was able to render simple scenes last night yes. I am doing my assignment write-up and showing the scene from the beginning. I could render simple images like these no problem with the render set-up. I did keep getting an error which was about

"Tessellation for NURBS curve" after I created the car in the scene. It didn't make any impact initially on my renders so I didn't think anything more of it.

I amn't on my PC at the moment, so it will be tomorrow before I check the GPU.

Thanks,

Sinead

Hi!

Do you have the same problems if you change the Render Layer preferences of your Maya to "Render Setup" ?
