Maya Compatibility with Mac OS X El Capitan (10.11)

I am not able to run my purchased MAYA 2017 (downloaded product) with El Capitan (10.11.6).

I see posts that indicate that MAYA 2016 works. Is anyone else having problems running MAYA 2017 with El Capitan (10.11.6)?

Does anyone have a solution? Thanks.

Hello,

I'm running Maya 2017 and 2016.5 on OSX 10.11.6 and everything works albeit a few crashes every now and again. What seems to be the problem? Are there any errors that pop up?

The Error says it's an "Unhandled Exception." I am a student and this purchased educational version starts with small dialog box popping on to inform me that this is an educational version of Maya and the saved file will always open with the dialog box announcement. I click "continue" on the

Hi, might be related to something i have experienced with 2016.5 under OSX 10.9.5 – it crashed when clicking continue in the EDU popup. "Fixed it" by just moving the edu-window away from the viewport (outliner/second monitor) before clicking ok. Posted about this here: http://forums.autodesk.com/t5/maya-forum/2016-5-glitches-student-version-popup-crash-gi-next-depth/m...

This does not happen with 2017 on my machines, but you might want to try if this works for you.

I'm using the student version too and haven't encountered that particular problem, though that popup is really annoying when saving 🙂

When you click on the crash report, does it give you anymore details on what that the unhandled exception might be? Did you have a previous or another version of Maya installed before 2017?

Yeah that bug seems to be highly specific to hardware/software/driver combination and for a strange reason related to the popup hovering over the viewport. This never happened before in any version, doesn't happen in 2017, only with 2016.5, and only the edu popup on file open and surprisingly not file import. Any other files work perfectly fine. Still, the problem might be related.

Oh it could have been the OpenGL profile being used in 2017. I was having some issues in 2016.5 where arnold environment lights wouldn't appear in the viewport but switching the OpenGL profile fixed it.

Thanks. I just tried moving the window, as you suggested. So far, it still crashes.

a bit annoying.  It only says " A software problem has caused Autodesk Maya 2017 to close unexpectedly." And it says Error: Unhandled Exception. Version: 201606150345.

Well, then it seems to be a different issue. Just be clear: You moved it over the Attribute editor? In my 2016.5 case i had to move it completely away from the VP, no overlap, if it overlapped with the viewport it crashed.

A few other things to test: Have you tried file->import instead of open to see if it also crashes when clicking continue? Have you tried loading files that have not been created by a student version (eduction/commercial?). You could open some of the example files that come with maya, or download something like the MASH examples from the autodesk website. If you have a (paid) EDU and not the student version, you files should actually not have the popup (they used to not have them at least in 2015 anway). Have you tried saving a fresh file from maya, and re-opening it? If it doesn't crash it must have something to do with the popup. Since I have experienced such weird behaviour with the student popup, I'm quite suspicious regarding that window, but yours of course might be a completely unrelated issue.

Thank you for all of the ideas. It's been difficult because  I cannot keep it running long enough to check on settings or open any files. I will though try moving the student popup to various locations before closing it. Also I should verify that it loaded correctly and I do in fact have a paid student license and not a free download version. Thank you again, everyone.

Ah ok, i guess what's happening is that maya actually crashes before the window pops up, and it actually shows because it's trying to save the autosave/crashsave file. The student version popup window actually only pops up if you save/load files, so it should not pop up at program start. Does it pop up the same time the crash report appears?

I suggest trashing your maya preferences, especially if you've copied them over from an older version. They are in /Users/YourUser/Library/Preferences/Autodesk/maya/2017. rename the "prefs" folder to "prefsBAK" or delete it. Try now. If it still crashes, you should log the crash with autodesk and try to get in contact with customer support. Also, do a full clean new install of maya.

Regarding the popup: I only know the popup from the actual student version (online download). "Education"-Licenses never had the student version popup, at least mine do not. Maybe there's another license option though that has the popup.

Hi there,

I'm having the same problem as you by the looks.

Running student edition of Maya 2017 on Ex Capitan 10.11.6, graphics card is ATI Radeon 5770 which I believe is supported....

and same crashes everytime.

Very frustrating as I'm stuck having read loads of forum suggestions already.

Did you ever find an answer to your problem?

Regards

Rob.
