Just as a heads-up two minor problems I've found with 2016.5 (in case anyone's having the same problem)
1) Might be limited to my specific hardware/software combination. OSX 10.9.5, Maya crashes when opening files via the "open" dialog or double-clicking if they have been created with a student version. It seems the problem is directly related to the Viewport and the "Student Version file" pop-up. As soon as the pop-up window is moved anywhere (over the AE, second monitor) instead of over the viewport, maya doesn't crash on clicking "Continue". If it's hovering above the viewport (which it of course does by default), it crashes. Interestingly, that doesn't happen on file import, even though the pop-up is of course still displayed. This is already logged as a CER. Don't ask me how long it took me to figure out that moving it anywhere else on the screen prevents the crash š
2) mr GI Prototype "Diffuse Depth" is set to a standard value of 3 in the Render Sttings. However, it will render with a diffuse depth of 0 by default. You can check that with the miDefaultOptions, which displays "0" for gi depth in the string options in a default scene. The slider value is actually only connected to the actual string option after you've moved it once. Minor problem, and I guess it's pretty obvious, but still, might help someone figure out why their GI Protoype renderings turn out that dark by defaultā¦
