Maya 2020 OSX Viewport Flickering Issue

Anonymous

Hi Guys,

I just installed Maya 2020 a few days a go and I am having very bad issues with viewport as well as frequent crashing with a fatal error message.

I am on an iMac with a 3d connexions mouse.

I have uninstalled Maya and the mouse drivers several times to no avail. And deleted preferences in documents.

From some searching here on the forums it looks like I may have a GPU driver issue? But I am on OSX Catalina which should have the latest Open GL Drivers. Switching to Open GL legacy in preferences helps a little but other things stop displaying properly.

Is there some sort of work abound? Please Help.

See attached for Video, Error message and System Specs

Hi @Anonymous,

Thank you for posting! This is a bit of a tricky situation; due to the timing of the release of Catalina, Maya 2020 has several known issues on Mac OS 10.15.X

I would suggest browsing this documentation.

While there are several issues currently that point to difficulties with the viewport. There's a known issue that the viewport can freeze or not update appropriately. In watching your video; I would suggest starting off by not using your 3D connexion mouse at all to see if this improves the issue. If you are also using a second monitor, I would suggest no longer doing so. As 2020 and especially 10.15 are very new, we expect these challenges to be mitigated significantly as time goes on. Given the environment you are struggling with, I'd suggest anticipating Maya 2020.1 as the improvements to stability will be very pertinent to you!

I hope this has been helpful; I know this isn't the best news to hear, please do feel free to reply with any questions and I will do my best to field them.

Hi Alec,

That is good to hear that these could be known issues and are being worked on. I will take a look at the documentation.

I am not using a second monitor, the only hardware I have is the iMac with Magic Mouse 2 and the 3d Connexions Space Mouse Compact. I did try with the Space Mouse unplugged and it seems to solve the flickering issue but I am still experiencing frequent crashes with the fatal error I posted above.

Do you know when 2020.1 will be released?

Thanks

hello @Anonymous

I cannot disclose when 2020.1 will be available for download, as the nature of these dates often vary, or even if they are cemented, can have market effects. I can assert that the wait won't be especially long, but I think that's my limit in this matter.

Nevertheless, I hope this is helpful!

I see in the video you have the smooth manipulator UI up for the smooth you applied. There is also a known OSX crash (currently believed to be Mojave centric) related to using the smooth manipulator (inputing a value such as 4 on the smooth and then clicking in the viewport can trigger a crash (not always though)). Perhaps you are hitting this issue on Catalina.

Ok, I think I may have a temporary fix for the crashing. I have not had any crashes since but only time will tell.

I had to use Time Machine (previous hard drive back up) and go back before Maya 2020 was installed and re-download it. From there I went to Security and allowed Maya 2020 to have "FULL DISK ACCESS". You must do this before opening it for the very first time. It seems that when you open for the first time it still creates files that were not in the install. This seems to be true for the first time you run Arnold as well. Allowing "FULL DISK ACCESS" after it has already been opened the first time does not seem to help. I was still having fatal errors and Arnold would crash.

I am still having issues with my 3d Mouse but Maya 2020 seems to be stable for the moment if I don't use the the mouse.

Hi!

Thanks for the detailed explanation.

Please mark every answer that solves your problem (or gives the correct answer) as solution, even if it's you own answer, so others interested in this thread will get a better overview.

I do not have a 3dconnexion mouse and I experience this same flickering issue in Maya 2020 every single time on my Macbook Pro (OS is Catalina, v. 10.15.2). I use a Razer mouse, but even with no mouse connected (just using the trackpad) the flickering persists. It is completely unusable in this state. I will roll back and use 2019 instead until the issue is fixed, but I wanted to confirm that this is affecting more than the OP.

Some additional details may help Autodesk diagnose the issue: If I have an object selected and go into face mode (or any others, such as edge, vertex, etc.) and hover over one of the faces, the correct view is shown. As soon as I move my mouse off of the object, it shows an earlier viewport frame. It seems like the viewport is holding a static version of the viewport frame in memory, and at some point gets stuck. Then when the viewport is idle, it shows that static frame.

I have the exact same issue. My OS version is Catalina 10.15.3.
