maya 2020 crashes without error message

Anonymous

please I am in dire need of a hero.

a maya file is corrupted both in autosaves and regular saves. they are saved in ascii format and upon opening the file maya crashes at a percentage without any messages in the maya internal diagnostic tools of my knowledge. i tried the regular stuff, installing new updates, deleting preferences, reinstalling maya altogether, trying it with other computers and versions and i even tried turning on the computer off and on again, however the file will not open.

therefore my guess is, that something in the file itself got corrupted even though i could open the file regularly the last week long. today however the whole last week is lost in saves i can not open it anymore.

i tried pinpointing the error by deleting code from a copy of the ascii file, this has proven quite ineffective because the culled file opens and crashes unpredictably, meaning sometimes i think i have the object which causes the issue but it seems not reliable as it varies.

i am able and willing to provide the file itself and the crashlogs (as much as they exist).

i would love to hear from you, because i would loose 70 hours of work if this is not retrievable.

in maya try: windows > settings/preferences > preferences > animation > evaluation mode: DG before opening the file.

fun fact: while writing this i tried again with my settings reverted back to parallel and this time it opened without problems....

if that doesn´t work for you i can save and upload my file.

i am really hyped that it can be opened by anyone, so there is hope again. thank you.

this trick doesn't do it for me unfortunately so a saved file from you would be a huge help. 🙂

thanks for taking time out of your day for me

here you go.

let me know if it works. there are some nodes not recognized by my system since i don´t have the plugins. if it´s still giving you problems i remove them as well.

i can open it again, thank you very much!

what do you think did it?

my current suspicion is ng-skintools. but also point on curve info and the whole matrix nodes could have done it. i am not sure however. based on what is missing those might be the culprits.

thanks again, and i hope you have a wonderful evening 🙂

Hi!

This could be a bug in Maya 2020 and Maya 2020.1.

Maybe you need Maya 2020.2 to open this scene.

Hi there,
It sounds like you're having big issues! I'm really sorry for that. I'm a User Researcher and quite removed from product development but have forwarded your message on. I hope that someone will be able to help.
Good luck!
Veronica.

Hi!

@veronica.meuris

As far as I see the problem has already been solved.

1) @_sebastian_f  "converted" the scene, so @Anonymous  can now open it again.

2) If this is caused by a bug in Maya 2020 and 2020.1, then it's already fixed since Maya 2020.2 .

Hi all,

I took a look at the scene in a text file and could not pinpoint what bug fix has resolved the issue.  But, this issue is resolved in the Maya 2020 updates 2 and 3.

Maya 2020 Update 3 has just been released. @christof.puehringer you should be able to update your Maya 2020 to one of the recent update releases.  Release notes can be accessed here:

Hope this helps,

Kelly

Maya 2020.2 has the same issues. I will test to open it in Maya 2020.3.

However the fix is, as far as i know at this moment and were able to reproduce, to open the file in an old version of Maya, in my case Maya 2014 but i guess , and then save it again. My guess is that @_sebastian_f has also another older version of Maya, which fixed the problem.

This are all assumptions though.

Thank you for your help guys 🙂

Hi!

If I remember correct the scene from @_sebastian_f  was saved with Maya 2020.2.

But there could also be some other issues.

For example I remember one problem with a scene from a user where the only way to open it without any crash was to create first a new scene create a new object and add any deformer and then open the other scene.

So maybe a plug-in needs to be enabled or disabled, or there is any other problem, something like this is hard to troubleshoot.

Sadly I currently don't have the time to look deeper into this.
