Maya 2018 update 4 has stopped working "wait or close program"

Hello everyone

I have been having very strange crash of late that seems to be directly related to update 4. As the obvious answer is the just revert back to update 3. I was thinking be better to see if i cant find some kind or solution instead and stick to 4 as it brings some nice features to this already great program. I have had 2 PC's now that have been having the same problem. I can't say what is the direct cause tried to recreate the result to no avail. Maya would be running perfectly and all of a sudden no fatal error no code prompt nothing and windows would just pop up with program has stopped working/responding would you like to wait or close program. This is very frustrating as it completely messes up files like autoback as well as if you didn't save prior to crash all the work would be gone as appose to when it fatal error crashes and gives you the temp save to basically right at the point of crashing. Have had other people have the similar problems.

Hi @ovgninja and welcome to the community!

When this crash occurs, is there a prompt to fill out an error report for Autodesk? If so, please fill it out and let me know what the CER report number is so I can look it up in our system.

Are there steps to reproduce this crash or does it happen randomly? Have you tried deleting your settings/preferences and/or clean uninstall/reinstall of Maya?

No prompt sadly which one of the reasons i thought i would post it here cause the internet info is usually pretty solid. Sadly it seems random tried couple of ways but fresh scene old scenes that were fine now crash. I have tried refreshing the preferences and seems to help little but still happens from time to time but it is clear that it is update 4 though all update 3 has no problem. Clean install has not been tried but like i said this is basically just after a fresh update 4 install. I have been trying to force the autoback and that safes the work at least. I have seems to find that consistent saving as in "shift+s" does prevent it so not sure if its maybe system or Maya being over extended maybe. So seems to be working okay now. So thanks for the reply if something else develops or i figure out how to recreate it i will post.

Hmm ok. Thanks for the extra info and yes normally a clean uninstall would be recommended as the next step.

If you do find concrete repro steps or if an error report does appear for you to fill out please let me know!
