Maya 2018, Problem with the transform Manipulator (Gizmo)

Hello ,

I seem to have a weird problem - the Gizmo (Transform Manipulator) doesn't seem to be working . I m trying to left click any of the individual red, blue or green axis to perform a move, scale or rotate but it doesn't select them , rather it just drags a square marquee on it. Its really frustrating . I didnt have this problem with Maya 2017 . Please any help would be greatly appreciable .

Thank you so much for this.   I don't think I would ever have thought of it myself!   Saved me a lot of frustration : )

I'm having the same problem with the gizmo/manipulator-thing, and i did not have this problem with Maya 2017, either. the manipulator is visible and looks as expected, but no change in color has i hoover over the handles and no reaction whatsoever if i try klicking it. (other than the dotted marking-rectangle-thingy when dragging mouse)

I checked off the "restore deafault settings" option as i opened Maya 2018 for the first time(20 mins ago) and haven't changed anything yet, but still tried deleting the preferences as you suggested, but still no function in the manipulator.

Any suggestions?

Have a look at the solution on the green background just under the first entry in this thread. That solved the problem for me and several others. Use the Legacy OpenGL renderer in the ViewPort 2.0 options for the best results.

I've had this issue in the past few versions of Maya. I usually select off of the object, then re-select it, and use the shortcut key for whatever manipulation I want to do.
Or you might be able to just change from rotate to translate, and then back to rotate for it to work correctly again.
It is an annoying issue that randomly occurs for me.

Hi,

Just installed Maya2018 and got immediate shock when my Transform/rotate/Scale manipulators were not getting selected. I have tried your solution of deleting the "pref" folder and opening Maya again. It didn't work (even deleted Maya folder itself).  Also my viewport renderer is showing only "renderer2.0" option, all other options like legacy viewport or legacy high quality viewport are not showing. Can you help !  (DirectX 11 installed on my system)

Those options you're looking for are in "Windows>Preferences>Preferences>Display".

Thanks Amr.Tawfik. It resolved my issue.

But if this is the issues with Maya then why they don't just change the default seetings to it.

My guess, is its because the other one works better and does some fancy viewport shadows or something. They just assume we're all on newish computers. Fair enough, but that's why I posted the answer in this thread so that when others have this issue they can see how to solve it.

You may be right but my system is pretty new and updated (DEll Precision T7810, Intel Xeon processor with 3.50 GHz and 32 GB of RAM, 64 bit OS), I hope this does not fall into the old system. I am not sure if this is a old/new system issue.

Forgot to add the graphic card info, it is Quadro K5200, just in case you feel it may be a graphic card issue.

might be time to get me a new card.

Probably is. I’m finding mine causes crashes from time to time (with a warning something like: “Graphics driver detected an unauthorised call.”). I think it struggles with the new Open GL etc. Trying to save up now : )

Hi,

I have the same gizmo problem and nothing I tried seems to work...?

I tried "restoring default preferences" - not sure if that's the same as deleting them - and since it was a whole new download anyways well... it didn't really do anything.

I have no idea what directx or GLLegacy are, so I went into the Settings Preferences - Settings - Rendering and changed the render setup to "Legacy", same in XGen with the Viewport 2.0 draw method, and same with the Renderer menu above the viewer, which only gave me a choice between viewport 2.0 and Arnold (so I also changed my renderer to Arnold in he renderer settings)... Uh... I have nooo idea what I am doing and it doesn't seem to work either.

Can anyone explain to me with simple words why the gizmo won't work and how to fix that ? Because I don't even understand why it would be connected to the renderer, since I'm not currently rendering anything.

From my understanding the issue comes from viewport 2.0. You use your Gizmo in this viewport.

I think viewport 2.0 is trying to do all these fancy things behind the scenes and your graphics card is not powerful enough to display them correctly.

So what worked for me was changing the setting I mentioned above (there were three to choose from for me) . I think this uses the CPU or just displays the viewport differently.

Don't forget you need to restart Maya when you change one of these settings for it to do anything.

Other than that I have no idea. Works for me. Best of luck.
