Maya 2017 crashing when loading plug in window

After months of using Maya 2017 with no problems, the software immediately crashes when I try to load the plug in window. I've tried uninstalling maya and reinstalling Maya 2017 and am still having the same issue.  I have also tried updating to update 4, which resulted in crashing maya upon startup. Has anyone had this problem and found a solution?

Hi @krystle and welcome to the community!

First off you may want to try deleting your settings/preferences.

If that doesn't work be sure to check all of your drivers and make sure they are all up to date and or compatible with Maya.

thanks @sean.heasley! I tried both of those things and neither of them worked. I also noticed I am getting this error when Maya loads. I'm not sure if it is related: // Error: file: C:/Program Files/Autodesk/Maya2017/scripts/startup/autoLoadPlugin.mel line 32: Plug-in, "Mayatomr", was not found on MAYA_PLUG_IN_PATH.

It looks like Maya is having trouble finding your plug-ins. Try removing all 3rd party plug-ins from the plug-in folder then reinstalling the ones you need.

I do not have any third party plug ins installed. I am still having the same issues even after un installing and re installing. Maya crashing the moment i press "plug in manager". I am also getting this bit in the script editor upon start up, not sure if its related:

Hi @krystle

When you go to uninstall, be sure to delete every Autodesk/Maya folder that can be found in your C drive as well as your documents folder etc.

Then try a reinstall.

Let me know if anything changes!

Hi @krystle

Thanks for posting! Sorry to hear that Maya is misbehaving. I wanted to check in and see how things were going?

Given that you have already reset your preferences and updated your drivers (thank you for trying those suggestions!), I would recommend doing a clean uninstall as @Anonymous suggested. The errors that Maya is giving you is related to your plugins (Mayatomr for example is an abbreviation of "Maya to Mental Ray"); Maya is unable to find them and connect them to Maya through the Plugin Manager.

Here are some links that can help you fully uninstall Maya and start with a clean slate:

  • Microsoft Fix it Tool - if you are on windows, uninstalling with this program will clean up any files left behind by previous installs that may be causing hangups with your current install of Maya.
  • Clean Uninstall

Please note that uninstalling Maya does not automatically reset your preferences, so I would recommend deleting or renaming your old preferences folder as well 🙂

Thanks for your time. Let me know if you have any other questions pertaining to this issue, I would be happy to help!

Coincidentally my computer crashed since posting this problem. I was never able to resolve it using any of the methods suggested above, however the problem is now fixed since i have installed maya on my new computer. Thanks for all the advice!
