Materials and animation lag time

Hi everyone,

I'm making a fight scene for my class and finally got to the point where I'm animating my characters, but my computer is lagging tremendously. The lagging only started when I applied simple rendering materials to the faces and assigned them colors in the attribute editor. Is there anyway I could turn  them off until I'm ready to render to reduce the lagging? I've tried messing around with the "show" pulldown menu and display > hide to hide texture placements but I get a "no objects to hide" message.

Try it with Shading->Use default material. (To the left of the "show" menu.)
