If you using MASH via an instancer node and of course change the LOD to BoundingBoxes for better viewport performance, the instancer is not show all the objects in Viewport 2.0 and it is really slow (yes, with bounding boxes).
Solution:
Strangely, if you switch to Legacy Default Viewport you’ll get all the objects and the performance is great.
Can anyone confirm this bug/problem.
Cheers, D

Now, I figured it out.
Using Viewport 2.0 you have to change the Cycle type to Sequential in the Instancer node.
Of course this is not ideal.
Always learning. 🙂
That's all.

I have this same problem in Maya 2017 update 4 and can only get the aiStandins to show in the viewport by setting renderer to Legacy Default Viewport.
I tried following your fix by setting the MASH_Instancer's Instancer>Cycle: Sequential, but it makes no difference. I can't make the separate instances show with any setting for Level of Detail -- just one overall encompassing bounding box.
Is there some step to make the individual instances show as individual bounding boxes or wireframe geometry?
In tutorials I have seen that use Maya 2018 they show, presumably in Viewport 2.0 render mode -- perhaps it was fixed?
I had the same issue with Maya 2018.5. My instance works fine in render view but nothing displayed in viewport, or only one bounding box if I change the LOD.
It seems Visibility in the transform of the standin, in the Display rollout, is disabled when creating the MASH, so I just re-enabled it and it works fine now.
Hi,
I have a similar issue with aiStandin instanced on particles with maya 2018.6
Did you manage to work around it ? I have visibility only on legacy viewport.
