Isolate Select not working properly Maya 2016 Service Pack 6

Hey everyone.

I´m pretty new to this community, but not new to Maya. The reason why I am posting is because I am a bit confused with the purpose of the Isolate Select.

It used to do what it should do, but in my current Version 2016 SP6 it does behave strange.

I have a lot of geometry to handle and when I work in details, I usually want the item of desire isolated to keep on working on details, edges, verts and faces, not disturbed by surrounding objects.

But this does not work. I can isolate the object, I can also change to Face mode, but I can´t select any face. Interrestingly when I deselect the isolated object and basically go out of face mode, I can´t switch back to face or any other component mode. Thats bizarre.

Was this confirmed as a bug or is this supposed to be a new feature which I dont get.

I haven´t found any useful answer so far, neither here nor anywhere where I have looked.

I highly appreciate any hint on this one here and I shout a "Thanks" in advance.

Cheers

P.S. Upgrading is not an option so far because we depend on our clients version and they are on 2016 only so far.

Hi @erce.erim and welcome to the community!

I just checked on my machine and the isolate tool is working fine and I can't reproduce your issue.

Could you possibly post a video of your issue so I can get a better idea of what's happening?

If you need a video capturing program, Screencast is a great option that we use here at Autodesk

Another quick workaround if you just want to get back on track is to use the 'Display Layers' tool. This way you can organize each object by a layer and easily toggle the visibility of them similar to how the isolate tool works.

Steps to use the Display Layers tool can be found here.

Let me know if this helps or if you need more information!

Hi!

I can't test it with this particular version, but if there really was a bug introduced the only option for you would be to change back to a previous SP version.

Hi @erce.erim

I'm just checking in again to see if you need more help with this. Did the Layer Tool workaround I provided yesterday help at all?

If that did not work or you are still having this issue, feel free to post a video here showing the issue and I'll be happy to help further!

Hey Sean,

sorry for getting back late on this and thanks for your time so far. I also tried to reproduce and you are somehow right. I can´t reproduce on a new scene with a simple primitives setup.

It seems that there is something messed up in the scene. I have checked the geometry in its original file and it works there. It only does not work in this scene.

BTW: setting up display layers is unfortunately not possible due to a huge amount of parts/objects and groups. It would require a lot of time, which I don´t have.

I could narrow it down to the Render Layer. It works fine in the default masterlayer, but in the Renderlayer this phenomenon comes up. And it seems that in this case it doesn´t matter which Render Layer I choose - in any of them it does not work properly. What I can tell is that the scene I am working maybe has been created in an older version - possibly 2015 or so...but not quite sure.

Right now I can´t provide any video because this is production stuff which I can´t show in public. However - maybe I can get the scene a bit modified this week to support something.

Sorry for not having more...

Thanks in advance

Cheers, Erce

Hi @erce.erim

Thanks for coming back and with the detailed post!

It's ok if the project is private/confidential you can either send a video or zip and send the entire project folder to me in a private message!

We have a strict confidentiality policy here at Autodesk and I can guarantee I will be the only person seeing the scene strictly for support purposes, and as soon as the issue is resolved, the project is deleted in it's entirety from my machine.

Let me know when you get a chance if anything changes or feel free to private message me and we can go from there!

Hi @erce.erim

I'm just checking in again to see if you're still experiencing this issue with Isolate Select . I also wanted to just remind you that it is totally ok if it is a confidential scene, you can either send a video or zip and send the entire project folder to me in a private message and we can go from there!

Hi @erce.erim

Thank you for sending me the scene file and I took a look at in Maya 2016 Service Pack 6 and you are correct. Isolate select would isolate an object but won't allow selection of faces, verts, edges etc.

I created a fresh scene and could not reproduce the same issue so it looks like it is something in the scene file.

However I opened it on Maya 2016 Extension 2 and I was able to isolate and select faces with your scene.

Therefore I would recommend either upgrading to Extension 2 or possibly rolling back to a previous version of 2016.

To upgrade to Extension 2 you can go here!

Steps to roll back to a previous version can be found here!

Please let me know if this helps resolve your issue!

Thank you Sean - I can live with that. I will give this information to our IT Department and sooner or later we probably will switch to 2017 anyway.

Again - thanks a lot

Have a good time so far 🙂

Sorry to dig this out again but for some reason we are not able to find the upgrade to Extension 2 in our subscription center. There is nothing in there. What could be the reason for this?

Thanks in advance.

Hi @erce.erim

After signing in, if you select the Updates tab you should see a list of all the versions of Maya you have access to.

step_01.png

This is what you will see after selecting Updates, you can then filter to Maya 2016

Hey Sean and thanks for getting back. Unfortunately all those Maya Versions do not come up. We did find a Extension 2 SP 2 installer as far as I remember, but that required  a installed version of ET2 - which we don´t have and cannot find. Our subscriptioncenter doesn´t show anything.

Thanks

Hi @erce.erim

Hmm that's unusual. I'm curious if there may be something off with your subscription?

Either way, I went ahead and hosted a download for the extension online and you should be able to download it here!

Please let me know if this works for you or if you need more assistance!

Hey Sean,

thanks for that link - which Ive forwarded to my IT. But unfortunately they are very busy right now and I am still choking on my old Version. I am not allowed to download the file anyway and have to wait till they have time for it. I can´t even check if the file is okay though.

Sorry. I will let you know if that helped out.

Thanks
