Hi!
To get rounded corners with extrude you need a rounded curve for the path. A higher curve degree (2 or 3 should be enough) and the usage of more curve points (control vertices) give you a better control over a smooth roundness.
If you ask about the artifacts you get with your extrude, please post your scene-file.
