Hi @Anonymous and welcome to the community!
Thanks for posting about this! I was able to reproduce this issue on 2018.4 and 2018.3 but it does not happen on 2017.5 so it looks like this is an issue that the dev team needs to fix.
I went ahead and logged this with them so they can work on an fix for a future update/release of Maya.

Hi @Anonymous
As of 2018.5 STL export works but the object must be a NURBS object. Standard polygons can not be exported via STL.

Will this option be available in a future release? This kinda takes Maya backward for me... or can I get an older version?
Hi!
In Maya 2019 STL has been removed from ATF and has been replaced by a separate exporter plug-in
which can export polygons.
I don't suppose there's any way I could get a student license for 2017 in the interim? I use Maya to design for 3d printing and the slicer (Repetier) only recognizes STL. I've tried converting polygons to nurbs and it fails. This has just become a hassle and I really want to keep using Maya. Any assistance you can provide, Autodesk team, is appreciated.
Installed 2019 and still no STL export option. No option in Plug-in Manager. Tried going to the revit products page to download the fix? but there's not an option to download on the Downloads tab. I click the link Subscription Account Portal and Autodesk Desktop Application to get 2019.2* - click on No Recent Updates and basically the trail ends. Where to go from here?
Hi!
Try a reset of your preferences.
Rename the folder prefs in folder 2019 to something like prefs_backup, or to reset everything, the folder 2019 to 2019_backup (or even the maya folder to maya_backup). Maya creates new folders (don't copy preferences from previous Maya versions). Detailed at:

It's in plug-in manager: stlTranslator.mll

this is stupid. the developers should never have these mistakes to begin with.
When I tried to import an stl file into maya using the import function it takes some time to load the file and then shows me only the default cube only (but it displays the number of triangles and vertices in the top right corner) . not sparate the object
Using Maya 2020.4 I managed to export an STL but when I import it into my slicer the shadow shows up and nothing else. I just started 3D printing and I'd really like to have the option to design my parts in Maya since I am more familiar with it than other programs. Any help would be appreciated!
