Hello,
I want to change my navigation controls in Maya because i don't like middle click to pan. I tried to change them in hotkey editor but i can't assign a mouse button, only keyboard ones. When i try to click alt+RMB it does nothing but when i click for example alt+T it works. I can do it easy in 3ds max but not in Maya.
Here is how my Hotkey Editor looks like

Hi @Anonymous and welcome to the community!
Unfortunately I don't believe there is a way to tweak the hotkey editor with mouse buttons like left click, right click or middle mouse button.
You could however link it to other buttons on your mouse if you have them. For example my mouse has 1-6 keys on them and I can link hotkeys to those.
All the best,

I tried pressing my macros on my mouse and it doesnt assign it
may i know how will i be able to assign it?
Is there a reason this is doable in Max, but not Maya?
Max even gives the option to use Maya like controls, as well as flat out letting you re-bind your middle mouse button.
In Max I had things arranged rather nicely so orbit was on MMB, pan on Shift+MMB, and zooming was of course scrolling the MMB.
At this point, it seems it's not doable in Maya because they don't let you do it. There is no bug - they just chose to not implement it for who knows what reasons, despite people bringing this issue up for years. Despite having a menu to rebind controls.
It's odd that they've taken the trouble to make 3dsMax more accessible than Maya in this regard - if you're comfortable with Maya's mouse controls, 3dsMax welcomes you with open arms. No need to overwrite muscle memory.

hello, i have a mouse with two side buttons over the Left, Right and Middle wheel. But i wasn't able to set those buttons as hotkeys...
How weird. Even Blender lets you change this. I mean All I want to do is change pan(track) with dolly command. Can't be bothered to use the middle mouse.
"Unfortunately I don't believe there is a way to tweak the hotkey editor with mouse buttons like left click, right click or middle mouse button." Any chances this will change?
I am absolutely new to Maya. I searched for the issue and came to this thread.
In Rhino, Z-Brush, Cinema 4D and Sketchup I have made this common setting. Orbit is with Middle Mouse Button, pan with Shift+Middle Mouse Button, and zooming is scrolling the Middle Mouse Button.
Any trick to customize the navigation in Maya ?
MMB is heavy,
Exacerbates RSI.
In node editors,
Alt + LMB = Pan,
Or allow customization.
Hot key
Hot button
Mouse button
pretty please
What a poorly designed application.
How is it possible that Maya doesnt support mouse button binding in 2023?
3DS Max customizability is top notch of course, but we're not asking for that level of detail... Just allow users to chose how to bind basic navigation commands to mouse buttons...
What makes me grind my teeth, is that by default, MMB press does nothing at all. No selection, no pan (like Max and many other software) just nothing. But MMB scroll zooms. it's not as if the button wasnt recongnized...
Not having the ability to assign a command to a button that already does nothing is pretty incredible. What a waste of a button that exists on all mouses in the world.
Keep hearing how Autodesk is letting Max fade away into nothingness. Maybe make sure your replacement is at least trying to be as welcoming as possible to users that come from other DCCs, by allowing us to make it not so frustrating to use
