FBX Export Crashing

Can anyone help me, I'm trying to do an FBX export of this project I made in Maya 2016 (Mental Ray) so that it can be imported into Unity. I've uploaded the project folder with the main project file ("VR_PROJECT.mb") as well as separate character animations if that would help breaking it up.

Hi @Anonymous

Thanks for attaching the project folder! I'm a big Oney fan so this is a pretty cool project to see Smiley Wink.

I was able to export the entire VR scene as an fbx and import it into Unity with no issues.

What are the hardware specs of your machine? Its possible your hardware may be buckling under the load trying to export everything at once.

Also, if you export something simple like one of the characters do you still see the crash?

Please let me know if anything changes!

SMALL WORLD! Glad you're fan too haha! And that's crazy you had no issues, I've even tried hitting up people on fiverr and no one can do it. Even when I do individuals, it crashes and textures are lost. Could you send me the FBX export perhaps?

Hi @Anonymous

Sure thing! I'm not 100% if it will all work in Unity cause I'm not a Unity expert but feel free to try it out and let me know how it works for you!

Glad to see it's at least exporting all the pieces! Unfortunately the textures are missing (it's all grey) and I wanna include the animation 😞

Hi @Anonymous

The textures you'll simply need to import into Unity manually and assign them accordingly there.

As for the animations, I did select for it to bake the animation on export but it's possible from the sheer size and amount of animation that it may of hit an error trying to export them.

I'm going to try exporting again and also try exporting one character as well to see if the results change!

Hi @Anonymous

You don't need to pay me I'm just happy to help Smiley Happy

That said, I am hitting some issues now. I was able to export fine the other day as you saw but now for some reason whenever I go to open one of your scene files Maya spits out a fatal error and crashes.

Is this happening for you at all across any of the scene files?

Hi @Anonymous

Ok I was able to get it open, seems like the fatal error is incosistent, and export just one of the character models to as an fbx which I have attached here.

I think this can work but there's a lot more cleanup you may need to do. It seems like there's still a lot of history on the objects, meshes aren't actually smoothed they just have the preview which is enabled by pressing the 3 key and things aren't combined like hair, limbs etc.

If you can go through and clean up these things I believe you should be able to export to Unity like normal!

Hey man sorry I was trying to fix it on my end, I'm simplifying the project so theres no longer characters and its simply a room you can walk around in. But when I do an FBX export, only the ground is textured?

You can't export to Unity with mental Ray shaders. Redo the shading with Maya shaders only and don't use any procedural shading networks, that won't translate.

So I've actually managed to find a way to make the world work in 3D with my textures.

Only thing I'm trying to figure out is why when I export just my character animation as a FBX, it only exports the eyes. It doesnt even include the animation when I say bake animation.
